I'll be curious to see if the MTL 48's are to scale. The Walthers 48's don't fit very well into the Deluxe or Athearn wells. I would love to replace mine with these if they fit better.

Well, keep your fingers crossed because MTL's 53' container is about 4 scale inches too long.  It does not fit in Deluxe Maxi IVs.   I'm surprised to hear you say that about Athearn cars though, because I thought that was a barely modified  version of the MDC cars, which carry my Walthers just fine.

I ordered 5 painted, unlettered paired window coaches from the LHS so I can go nuts trying to put the stripes on a PRR "close enough" P70 variant.

Goooooooooooooooooooood luck on that!! I've got a whole batch of re-worked cars to paint and decal Pennsy, from a 14 section heavyweight to a "View" series obs, so I feel your pain.

I was doing the math...  If I buy 3 sets of the runner packs for 6 coaches, and I can sell the 3x RPO, 3x Observation and 3x Parlour cars for $10 each then the coaches are "only" around $33 each.  But then there's postage and the hassle of trying to sell them, etc.  Might as well just go nuts doing the hobby part rather than the other stuff.  And I still might have to repaint the coaches if I do any mods to them.

If you do that, I'd buy one of the parlor cars. I know it doesn't help much, but it's a start.

Thanks for the support, but I've already ordered 5 unlettered coaches so I'm not contemplating that any longer.

For one, it helps to know that the cars were first announced back in July: https://www.micro-trains.com/publicfiles/monthly/MN1607.pdf (page 5).
Then, if you go to the BLW "What's new" page [ http://www.blwnscale.com/update-log3.htm ] and scroll down to 7/01/16, you'll find the link to the page with the PRR passenger car set.

Is the New Haven RPO even vaguely like anything they actually had? More than just being an RPO lettered for New Haven?

The Micro-Trains model is based mostly on the 1913 as-built New Haven prototype with some Great Northern features thrown in (primarily the 4-2/3-3 window arrangement).  While the window configuration on the prototype was modified from a 4-2/2-4 arrangement to 4-0/0-4 in 1941, the model is accurate to the prototype other than that.  The paint color / lettering scheme is accurate to the New Haven prototype for 1940s and after.

Specifically, the paint color was matched to NYNH&H paint chips so this arguably is the most accurate New Haven model ever produced by Micro-Trains, both body-wise and deco-wise.
