Solution for the Under slung coupler..

Using the Bowser PRR Caboose with MT 1015 as an Example..
Washer on Right - No Washer on left.
-- Remove the Top Plate and Trim the box to sit flush on the floor. 

(Either on purpose or on accident - the Box Design makes this really Easy!.. compared to the standard 1015 box.)


.. I'm guessing you'd need a flat surface to mount to .. to keep the coupler and box level.  (i.e. Might not work on a Kato loco... but you might be able to get away with a .005 shim for a flat surface.

FWIW, I put an order into BLW for some other stuff , and added 2 packs of TC couplers and he's showing them to be shipped, and didn't mention anything about delay.

Looking forward to getting some of these! First application will be between an A-B-A set of Intermountain F units, then will see how they could be used on passenger cars. 8)

Nah... that was the drones that MTL was trying to use to deliver these fine couplers.

Joe, I just rewarched your video, and noticed the caboose coupler is lower than the others..

So my Bowser underslung idea should work on the MT caboose under frame to bring the knuckle up to the correct height..

One thing I've been curious about is if the mounting hole and coupler post line up with the mounting hole and alignment hole on the old underframes.. which would allow you to screw into the rear hole and the coupler post would set into the front hole.

Right.  We are also looking at an underslung option, but clipping off the bosses will get it a lot closer.   Not sure about that final option, but I can look into it.

The difference in size between the True-scale and the standard coupler is truly remarkable.

Visually, I am sold on these.  The rest of the fleet will definitely be converted.  Functionally, I am patiently waiting for others with a higher level of skill and experience to provide their input.

p.s.  Thanks to MTL for providing extra air hoses.  Those little suckers are hard to find, once they hit the floor.

Jim.. Did you trim the box and omit the top plate to lower the car, or are you using the complete box..?

We know they are on the streets so that's cool!

Today I'm working on a conversion for the Atlas 90 Ton Hopper.  Thinking about starting a conversion Thread Similar to the Notes on Body Mounting..
(Or should I continue that thread with True Scale instillations?)

Jim.. Did you trim the box and omit the top plate to lower the car, or are you using the complete box..?

I lowered the car by removing the washers that were between the trucks and the bolsters, omitted the coupler top plates, and sanded the nubs off the top of the coupler box.  The couplers should be close to the correct height above the rails, after all that.

Is there a height gauge for these? Or at least a recommendation of the height they should be set at?

The difference in size between the True-scale and the standard coupler is truly remarkable.

Quite striking indeed.  I'm really looking forward to trying these out.  For me, the jury is out until I can compare them head to head with the LEZ couplers and the etched pockets, which I'm still very happy with.  The LEZ coupler has the distinct advantage of being compatible with other N couplers, while being close to scale size.  The MTL True-Scale has the advantage of being from MTL.
