When did scale speed motors start coming in black instead of gray?

I recall either Paul or Cory from atlas (pretty sure it was Paul) answering that question here. You should be able to do a search on it (use advanced search to narrow the search for those specific members' posts).

Just noticed same with new DCC RS11.

Do the black housing scale-speed motors have any distinguishing mark or number on them so we can easily tell them from the
older version with the different armature winding (the "fast" ones)?  I'm hoping there is an answer to this.  It was nice being able
to tell the two motor versions apart by the gray color.

I'm holding a "OLD FAST" motor and I don't see a single marking on it.

I am kind of hoping the "New Slow" motors have something on them to identify them now that they don't have the gray bell housing.

I'm interested in this too. I'm trying to standardize motors and decoders to make speed matching easier.

How about measuring resistance across the motor terminals? While this is not a good way to try to measure resistance of a single winding, there might be enough difference between the slow and fast speed motors resistance range to be able to easily tell them apart?

I have an Atlas SD60 with a fast speed motor and a factory installed Lenz decoder.  Has anyone replaced the motor with an Atlas slow speed motor?  Will the Lenz decoder adapt to it or do I need to install a different brand decoder?

I just did 3 SD60's (although without decoders, which I need to add).

Very easy job...

Thanks.  What brand of decoders are you planning on installing?  I don't know much about Lenz decoders but I got a really good deal on the SD60 and it came with the factory installed Lenz decoder.  I tested it on DC since I don't have DCC at home.  It ran well in both directions but probably needs a new set of contact strips.

This is a good idea.  Unfortunately, I don't have an scale-speed ones here at the moment.
Anybody got one, and an ohmmeter?  Can you measure the resistance across the terminals and report in?

DCC decoders and motors are both universal - they are all compatible with each other. I'm talking about standard hobby motors with permanent magnets and with iron-core armatures (like all the Atlas motors).  But some decoders don't give good speed control of coreless motors which are sometimes used in new models.
