Haha!  The G&W is the new Borg.  I'm sure that @wm3798 will look forward to the G&W's paint scheme on yet more locomotives with this merger.  :P

Basically, because G&W is the great homogenizer of shortlines. They're also not nearly as railfan friendly as most of the lines they gobble up are either.

Oh, and their orange and lemon yellow paint scheme is second only in horrendousness to this:

Never ceases to fascinate me how G&W, RailAmerica, and Watco have made growing rail empires out of stuff often discarded by the Class 1's.

Actually, I really like that scheme....for Colorado.  Not so much for northeastern Pennsylvania.

I have often thought they would eventually get enough trackage to create some kind of long haul or through route. But there might be some regulation against that... who knows.

I respectfully disagree.  Colorful locomotive schemes are as fundamental to the West as conservative and muted schemes are to the Northeast.  The orange-yellow Grande Gold is a perfect match for autumn aspen leaves and in its native Colorado habitat, looks stunning.  I've always been a closet D&RGW fan.  That said, Grande Gold does not belong east of the Allegheny Front no matter how nice it looks.
