I have to be in Timonium for a two-day seminar tomorrow and Wednesday for continuing legal education, and, as luck would have it, I'll be practically around the corner from MBK.  I'm considering buying a couple of pieces of HO Code 83 flextrack to use as a test track for my ten wheeler when it arrives this week.  I figure that the HO track might be significantly less expensive than On30 flextrack, and, if I do handlay track on this layout, I could still use the HO track for hidden staging.

Just put 2 cars down side by side and figure it out?  Like around 2.5-2.75" or more if you want finger room.

One thing about O scale you probably don't realize how big the buildings and stuff like that really is.

@Chris333,

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do.  But, 2.5" to 2.75" seems awful close for O scale.  I'll get back to you when the determination is made.

Track cl to cl is 3" and you will find that O scale takes up lots and lots of room.

Been there done that:

The Tweetsie Ten-wheeler is a very large locomotive.

Not as big as the G Scale (1:22.5) Bachmann ET&WNC ten wheeler sitting on top of my desk at work.

Seriously, I think it will be a surprise to design a layout in O scale, since my experience over the last ten to fifteen years is limited to N scale.  :o

This will be fun to watch!   Maybe you can generate a coincident proliferation of traffic in the HO and Larger Scales board here too.  ;)

No, not yet.  @seusscaboose has talked about getting me access, but I haven't gone yet.

Looking at the 1998 article I'm glad to see the runaround added at Soda Creek. Mine runs up to Furlow should provide for some interesting operations...

Taking a quick look at freight cars, it seems like there is limitless modeling possibilities :)
Can even run intermodal! in 1935!

Have one of those also.

But you will find that O scale is really space devouring.

The Soda Creek plan was terribly optimistic for a 10x12 in G-scale.

Way too small for that scale and barely make the same in O scale narrow gauge.

Furlow was in his demented "toy" train layout stage when he designed that one.

Point taken.  If I remember correctly, the minimum radius for the On30 ten wheeler is 18".  That surely puts a premium on space as compared to an N scale layout.

I've been toying with the (lazy) idea of setting back up the HCD portion of the Seaboard Central that I tore down (Hamlet Yard and Raeford).  The legs are still attached to the door, and it's just leaning against the wall.  If I add a couple of inches to the width and length of that door by overhanging a sheet of 2" foam on all sides, I can fit a loop with 18" radius curves.  This would merely be temporary while I get used to modeling in this scale and then can take my time properly designing the layout.  Oh, and it would allow me to ease my way into a new scale without my wife filing for divorce.

Sadly, no.  The seminar is 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. tomorrow and Wednesday, and I've got to be back in Delaware by 6:30 p.m. both days to avoid daycare issues.  Thanks, though.

Ahh, well, if you're embarking on some O scale, you should definitely try and make that a priority.
