Just replied on the old thread.  Like any model railroader, I hate derailments, too, including thread derailments!

Augh! None of the sizes in the poll covered my dimensions -- a kidney-bean shape of 7'9" x 10'9". So I stuck it in the 9x9-12x12 slot. My thread in this blog subject sorely needs an update. And I need to get some part of the scenery presentable (i.e., finished) for the MM train pass-through.

Yeah, that's where I would have put it.  :D

Hmm... good job...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

If I ever start building - L shaped (26' x 8' short leg, 32' x 10' long leg)  Larger - but not huge.. and towns are designed to be 60-75% of actual scale size.. It's designed around a short line that runs 1 train a day, but I made sure that each town had a 8-10' passing siding built into it to allow a true operating sessions.

30x20ft garage, another ~450sqft in the house, and a couple shelves in the bathroom and laundry room to get between the two spaces.

Thanks to a few reconsiderations and "do overs," this isn't 100% accurate, but it's close enough.

The Long Valley Branch is built on a 24" x 80" Hollow Core Door.

I have had a layout on a 36 x80 in. hollow core door for a few years.  It has a provision for possible expansion.  It's partly ballasted but I seem to be in a scenic funk.  I guess it scares me.

This was the track plan of my layout before it was dismantled two months ago (sold our home of 37 years) and is now in the upstairs of a good friends house being reassembled.

Rod, that must have been a tough decision to part with such a beautiful railroad; I wish I could have seen it in person.

My old FEC layout was 10' by 12' using one side of a 10' by 20' room. Late last year, I tried expanding it to feel the whole room, and it never ended up feeling cohesive. It felt like the original layout with an extra section haphazardly added, and the expansion didn't do all that much to improve the operations on the layout. (Sidings were still too short, the yard was still poorly designed, not enough run-around tracks for industries) So now I've taken that layout down and I'm modelling the DM&E in the same 10' by 20' space, with a plan designed for the whole room instead of one side with an expansion. So 10' by 20'.

Hi Otto.
You know after all the years in the hobby and deciding to downsize our home it was not too hard. As you know I have been fortunate to sell the RR and have been involved up to my eyeballs in its relocation which is giving me a great deal of satisfaction.
I am endeavoring to show the progress of the move on my blog so keep watching.
Best regards
Rod.

What was (is) the overall footprint of your pike, Rod?  Did you operate it as a point to point layout?

Garry, my railroad room started life as a single car garage which was approx 20 x 14 ft. The SFRSD started life in 1994 in that size, only after I lined all the walls. In 2008 ish I added an additional 6 ft along one wall so it ended up being 20ft x 20ft. The town of Flynn was moved out to the new outer wall with Guthrie being added opposite. Perry took the old Guthrie's place
Yes the RR was operated entirely point to point during monthly ops sessions which I held over 20 years or more and since 2013 with full signalling and a dispatcher.
Its kinda sad to see it go however I am enjoying working towards its resurrection in my friends house with a few mods.
Thanks for asking.
Rod.
