Smaller than a 4x8 , barely .  It's 38" x 96"  on a rolling cabinet . I can keep it against the wall but move it if necessary .

Slightly under 10x10 around the walls 18 inch wide shelf. I used an HO plan from MR (Cunningham's Gap) and converted it to N using Atlas code 55 track.

The Santa Fe-All the way is 20'x30' double decked with a separate room 8'x13' for staging yards, show loop helix and dispatching/ work area. Mainline run 464'. Gordon

I don't see why not.  The usable area is the sum of both decks.

I voted based on my next layout, 8 x 17.  While no benchwork, we have started room prep, converting an attic space to an A/C one.  My last layout (IHB of Texas, which you can search on this thread) was bigger, 10 x 24.

What strikes me about some of these garage size layout threads (my IHB was enclosed room, but garage size) is how much you guys put in the space.  Mine was an around the walls with a 5 foot aisle, giving more comfort to operators.

Ditto the Mark Hinds plan at 8 x 14 shown here.  I am planning a fairly simple switching layout without continuous main, although, I have to say, I am now doodling a plan based on that one before I start the bench work.  However, one wall is 14 foot plus the three foot entry door, so that yard and loop would actually fit perfectly.  My version would leave off the peninsula to the right, in favor of leaving room along the other wall for a 17 foot branch line for switching, which should be plenty for operating interest, while leaving the continuous run option for when the grand kids come over.  Which means I would have a reach to the back corner behind the turntable and a few other things in the name of about 10 foot of visible continuous loop run, when I am trying to simplify.

May I ask you, Mark, how complete is the layout and how satisfying is it to run?  What is the turn back radius, how deep is the bench work at the yard, etc?  You have given me something to ponder!

I don't have a full track plan currently. I should work on that. My layout wraps around the walls and through the middle of an 18' x 20' garage. The main line is about 55' long. It is a point to point. I show my updates on the FB page for my line: https://www.facebook.com/The-Skally-Line-622543801174710/

Here you can see the main town on the line, Rush City. I am modeling this section as close as I can to the prototype. I used a combination of satellite photos and shots I have taken on the ground to get it as close as I can. I will be making some changes soon, as the line just cut in a new switch last week. The scenery has progressed a long way since I took this shot.


Here is the interchange town on the line, Hinckley. That's my friend HK, running one of the SCXY jobs.


Behind the corner you can see one of my industrial areas, North Branch. I'm working on building the structures for this area right now.


I need to update my photos... soon enough.

My planned layout - which WILL get built... someday (hell COULD freeze over, couldn't it?) - will be 2'x4'. Just 'cause I like small layouts. In fact, I have more than one in mind. And if hell manages to go through multiple ice-ages, they might ALL get built. (Yea... not likely.)  :D
