Bachmann 2016 NMRA Announcements

I just got the email from Bachmann with a link to their 2016 product announcements.  No SPF gold this year. N scale starts on page 7.

Bachmann 2016 NMRA Announcements

  • Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation with DCC Sound Value Decoder - MSRP $399.00
  • GE Dash8-40CW with DCC Sound Value Decoder - MSRP TBA
  • 72' Smooth side Baggage car - MSPR $49.00
  • 85' Smooth Side Coach with interior lighting - MSRP $59.00
  • 85' Smooth Side Observation with interior lighting - MSRP $59.00
  • 40' Wood side Reefer - MSRP $37.00
  • PS-2 Three-bay covered hopper - MSRP $35.00

I guess the good news is that they are doing another run of the 2-8-0 which means that hopefully parts should be in good supply.  I wonder if they have re-engineered the mechanism to use the coreless motor that they like on their new models - like the did with the newer versions of the venerable 2-6-2/0-6-0 recently.

Aside from the aggressive pricing, any comments on what the prototype passenger cars might be based on the window arrangemens? The 72' baggage looks much like the Kato car?

Kind of a light year for N scale with them. Actually kind of lite all around.

I guess they know their business, but there are some odd choices in there, especially with the cars.

Just looking at it, I wonder if this is an ATSF 70' baggage express car from the big order in the late 50s- doors look right and it is about the right size.  Which leads me to wonder if they designed this car first, and the fluted car is this car with fluting added to it?  In any case, it has the general lines of that car, and lots of the "economy" baggage cars turned out by ACF and PS in the 1950s.  Rather like the Walthers baggage, but different doors.

The coach looks like a PS 52,54, or 56 seat car, but only seeing one side of it makes it hard to say for sure.  Given the 6 large windows (rather than 7, on at least one side, it is a different car than either the Con Cor or Walthers cars.  One of those that will pass for a lot of things, give or take a small window here or there.

Paging Mr. Laboda....

Looks like we'll have to wait one more year for the Eggliner.

Aside from the baggage, which may be close to an ATSF car, they are foobs once again, just like their quasi-Budd cars.  One of the things that sticks out to me once again is the placement of the window section, like their heavyweight coach the windows are placed a bit too low.  Don't know why they would do this but at such a high price it really doesn't matter to me... I am not interested.

My thoughts exactly... Might be interested in another 2-8-0 or tho... But will depend on the discount+sale price

The PRR K4s listed for $399 also and was discounted to the $230-$250 range depending on the retailer.  At MBK when they have their 10% off Bachmann sale (like right now) that include the K4s you can get it for close to $200.  Not horrible, but not trivial either.  But not out of line considering you can get a 2-8-0 at Trainworld for between $59 and $79 and add a better sound decoder (ESU or Tsunami - not MRC or Digitrax) and it will run you $160-$200 total plus the labor to do it.

Well, if N scalers want to model a shanty town, there are plenty shacks and out buildings available to model one; but real industries still elude the scale that needs them.
