Santa fe turtle back tender UPDATE!!!!!

Seeing as the convention this year is a whole 20 minutes from the house next week, I got my butt back in gear to finish off this title back tender for one of my 1600 class Santa fe light 2-10-2s. I'll be entering this along with accompanied engine into the steam class for the model contest. This is my first go round but I figured I might as well enter something.
I've finally finished applying the rivets I got from Rodney. I don't think it looks too bad for my first try at these. A little black paint, decals, and weathering should finish this up nicely.
Sorry about the horrible lighting in my hotel room. I'm working on my model railroad while the real railroad keeps on the road

That looks awesome. Those tenders were crazy, and it's a great model of one of em.

Adam,
Splendid model.  The rivets really make it pop!

I think that will do well in a model contest.
Good luck.

That tender is looking mighty good!  The rivets add so much to the overall appearance.

This thread should really be in the scratchbuilding section of the forum - it deserves that.  It would have been even better if the entire building process was documented in it. It is inspiring.  If I recall it, the entire body is just a solid block of wood. correct?

Yes, the tender shell is cut out of a chunk of 1/2" mdf board. I'm pretty sure it was 1/2 lol. I'll have to measure. Id prefer it here though so I can show progress of it with the rest of the locomotive when I join the 2 together.

Nice!

I wonder what makes that locomotive not worthy of the Weathering, Detailing and Scratchbuilding forum?  :?

Adam, that tender rocks! It looks like a piece of art, almost a shame to paint it....

Thank you very much Otto. I'm with you, I kind of don't want to but it wouldn't look very good behind a painted 1600class.
On a side note otto, my plan is to make another for casting purposes. I would have with this one but I wentotoo far once I put on handrails. Also I've seen many handrail configurations on these so just the riveted body will allow for that.

Thanks again for the kind words everyone.
I'll have more pictures later this evening after painting and hopefully decalling.

That's one of the best scratch built pieces I've seen.  Good luck in the contest,  personally I think you have a winner

"That's one of the best scratch built pieces I've seen."

I don't disagree, but I am inclined to go a step farther and say it's one of the best tenders I've seen, period.  Prototype is a "signature car" for the Santa Fe, so it will make the accompanying locomotive quite distinctive, especially in N scale, where the locomotive selection is limited.

If you decide to go ahead with resin castings of a second one, looks like there will be plenty of interest.

Best of luck in the contest, you are setting a very high bar.
