...The US has gone 53 feet but MT will stay at 48, thank you very much...

Hmm... and Bachmann is

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

And then there's the post (on another page) re the convention showing the ad from NSR - from an unnamed manufacturer - showing six new 53 foot cans.   The US has gone 53 feet but MT will stay at 48, thank you very much...

Not everyone models "current".  Even in my former era of "Year 2000 or so", there were still a LOT of 48's around...even as late as 2008 I photographed a lot of them.  Less, to be sure, but they were still around in good numbers and not at all unusual at that point.

If these cars are made of metal so that they track better/when empty, I see there being a market for them.   Except...   MTL won't release them with any regularity, and when they do they'll likely be foobie paint schemes.    It's just what MTL does...they can't help themselves.   I just hope they aren't expecting a homerun with these, but at least if they're metal the undecs might do ok.

As far as I could tell, by about ten years ago most 48 stand-alone well cars (including the draw barred sets) had ended up in trash train service.

Mind you though, the point isn't that no one wants to model trains with 48' husky stacks, it's just that most people who do probably have their MDC or Athearn versions already.

Many of them were also cut down into modern 40' well cars or stretched into 53' wells.

Chopped down 40' well car (notice the weld marks showing through the paint)

Lengthened BNSF 5 pack (I like how they didn't even repaint this one only a patch job)

and then there's this, Probably the best quote ever on a rail car lol

I was not aware of the lengthened Maxi-IIIs.   Thanks for sharing that.

I agree, we're sort of "burying the lead" here a bit...the reality is we have virtually no 53 foot cars that are more of a need for most modern modelers.

But back to the 48's one more time....I photographed a BNSF train in June of 2015 and 11 of the 118 platforms were 48ft wells.   Granted, that is an anomaly...I even remember thinking that at the time that it was unusual to see so many 48's in one train this late in the game.  But the reality is some haven't undergone conversion yet even today.

Yes, but how many were stand-alone wells like the Husky Stack?  I'm willing to bet one, with two 5 unit articulated sets making up the rest.

How much you wanna bet?  :D

First of all, I made a typo...there were actually 14 not 11.

There were four stand-alone cars...three of them were drawbarred, though.

I would have bet 5 bucks, and if not for your mistake forgetting the drawbarred set I would have won. :D :D :D

I knew it wouldn't work - just wanted to show what it looked like.  Somebody smarter than me (means about everybody) can maybe tell us why.

All I know is flickr and photobucket work and google doesn't any more.  Their loss.  A pity.  They usually do things right.
