Went to central Pennsylvania to see a close friend retire from the Pastorate and stopped by Jim Thorpe / Mauch Chunk on the way home to see the beautiful railroad station. Evidently the scenic trains only run on the weekend so we missed out on that but managed to get a few shots of the tourist train and station.

Does a GP30 pay the same rate at the meter as a car?

I thought they were GP30s also and they were initially when the ATSF got them. They were rebuilt to GP38-2 standards and, as it says on the side of the engine, the R&N referrs to them as GP39RN's. They are not the same as the handful (23) of GP39's built new by EMD. Neither were they the same as EMD's GP39-2's which sold 200+ units.

Apparently there's a whole story behind the GP39RN name too. I think someone at the R&N was offended by the whole "They're just GP30s" thing, and wanted to make sure they were properly branded. I need to get my friend Ryan to post here with the whole thing.

Either way, I love em, but I think the crews aren't as smitten.

Road behind one in '06 on a trip from DC to Philly and back. At the time, I had been playing MS Train Simulator a lot. The NEC scenario out of DC had a spot built in where it would shut down due to "electrical troubles." Thought it was funny when, 30 minutes into the trip, we came to a stop and the conductor came around to tell use there were "electrical troubles." Someone at MS had done their homework, and it still ended up being a cool trip. 8)

Toasters and Amcans. That's the NEC I grew up with and will always remember.
