Did your friend put an interior in it? That many windows almost begs to need something inside of it. I could see not having something inside maybe drawing your eyes to the other details you may think were off,

No, he made it as a flat, placed against the backdrop.  But it is not the windows - it is the overall look of the structure's exterior.

Didn't walthers get the steel mill from Trix?

I don't think anybody knows for sure but I think might be Heljan or maybe just made by some Chinese model RR manufacturer. Strictly speculation on my part.
