Anyone Airbrush Modelflex Paint on Metal?

I'm thinking about getting an Atlas S2 switcher and spraying it L&N gray and yellow. But since the shell is metal (or did I read that wrong?), can I paint it with Modelflex acrylic paint? If I need a primer, which one should I use? Thanks for any info.


Hmm... I'd just dip the
shell in a bucket of
paint and call it a day...

You will need primer. Try Testor's acryl primer. Then hit the shell with a hair dryer in hot for a few minutes. Should help adhesion.

For the primer, I'd be more comfortable using Scalecoat (not Scalecoat II) MOW gray. I've used it before and know what to expect.

Also consider Tamiya primer for metal. Don't be put off by the rattle can, it's incredibly fine stuff.

Isn't the (factory undecorated) shell already primed with something? Mine does not appear to have bare metal showing.

That would be very convenient! I just ordered an undec S2 from Brooklyn Locomotive Works, and I hope to get it Wednesday or Thursday. In the undec photo on the BLW site, the hood looks very much the same shade of gray as the plastic cab (very slight difference, to my eye).

It would save me at least $15, since I wouldn't have to buy Scalecoat MOW gray 1 oz ($4.95), plus thinner (another $4.95), plus shipping.


Hmm... that's money better
spent on buying bananas...

I received my undecorated S2 from Brooklyn Locomotive Works today. It has a bunch of TINY parts I need a magnifier to see. I'm so glad I didn't order a painted loco that I would have to strip first. I was impressed by how thin the handrails are.


Hmm... I bet Kiz'll make
me assemble the parts
for him after he paints
the loco...
