No the crews do not get use to that. There are still several incidents that resulted in deaths that still haunt my Dad even though there was nothing he could do about it. On that note I have been trying to gather all of his videos and pictures and capture his stories from working on the SP. I have some pretty interesting items to share in the future.
My friend Paul took early retirement when he felt he was "due" for his 16th death. He remembered every one of the accidents-- one in particular still haunts him. The helplessness he felt was palpable as he described what it was like. Besides the non-railroaders that get killed in grade crossings, or walking along the tracks, every railroader I've met has lost brothers in this line of work.
