There's all sorts of awesomeness in that collection- ACL, SAL, RF&P, A&R, SOU, CRR, VGN, and even a shot or two of B&O, C&O, and PRR!  Thanks for the link, John.

By the way, my favorite picture is the NS local on the trestle at Mackeys, North Carolina.  The caption says the train was going five miles per hour and the bridge was almost eight miles long.  That means the crew spent more than one hour crossing that bridge!  :o

Great site.  In addition to the Lamb photos, several other great photographers.
THANKS!

I got to meet 'Pantego' Jones, who was the last surviving employee of steam era NS.  He also rode a Baldwin into the sound there once when the bridge collapsed.  He told stories about riding one of the big 2-8-4s across that bridge, and how scare it was.

Sure is!  I could darn near stage that shot, except that the photo photo is from before the addition was put on the enginehouse.

Even some VGN under wire:

Is the middle engine just along for the ride? Why is the pantograph down?

garethashenden:  They look like they have jumper cables between the roofs, so they probably did the same as the GN's Y-1s.  Those had odd "stinger" contact shoes on the roof ends, to connect the pantographs, and could run multiple units with one pan.  They usually used two, the front one on the lead unit, and a second somewhere in the consist, seemingly at random, but there are pictures of trains along the Wenatchee River, downhill towards Wenatchee, with only one up.

The MILW did the same thing with their three and four unit boxcabs, but they used jumpers like the VGN.  The MILW units were drawbar connected, and the middle unit(s) had the pans removed.
