All-brown UPS van

We in N scale finally got the UPS truck and trailer but does anyone know if the all-brown UPS van that delivers packages to our doorsteps is being prepared for production by anyone (in N scale)?

That would be really nice, but I haven't heard anything about it.

The only one that has been available was the NJ International pewter model which is long out of production.  According to Carter F. it is most likely 1:150 scale, or even larger.  But it had the right look of the van with rounded nose (which UPS used up until early 2000's).  If someone makes a UPS van, I hope that it the prototype they model as the current ones have the front end which looks like it is made from various spare parts.

I believe I have seen something like that on E-bay.  Brown delivery van but wasn't advertised as UPS.  Maybe WPS to avoid copyright trouble.  It was several months back.  It was obviously a UPS truck but I can't remember the era.

Busch has one available that might work for the early 2000s.  Unfortunately if you are modeling a North American scene, it has German lettering.



The UPS North American versions also used the Freightliner or Dodge iteration of the Mercedes Sprinter.  And, I cannot confirm that any of the North American parcel vans were in this paint scheme before the newer "acorn" paint scheme appeared in 2003.

                ASHLIN DESIGNS www.ashlintrains.com who has had a table at local shows here in Utah and Evanston, Wyoming has an N Scale model of the currently in use UPS Van's/truck's, trucks in right side of photo in other post.  His models are a solid castings that are hand painted, the UPS logo and graphics on the side are a reduced down color print out cut out and pasted to the sides. The model has nice rivet detal, and panel lines on the sides, good wheel and tire detail. The side logo designs lack the speed graphic effect seen on the stripe on most of the real vans. Officially licensed ? Probably not. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake, Utah.

I thought there were two sizes of the classic (80's-90's) package car. Wasn't the van along with their mustangs produced by Marks Metalmodelclassics from Germany? I don't have my sample in front of me (I'm in Thailand), but I feel the dimensions - width and length were about right for the larger van.

FYI, they're called "package cars" by UPS, and there are definitely different sizes.
Source: close friend who's worked in their engineering department for many years.

If anyone wanted to make a model of them, I might be able to scare up some details to facilitate your work.

But good luck finding a good match to "pullman brown", it's a very tightly controlled color.

  were many straight 40' trailers before the Drop floor trailers were
  delivered in numbers.
  back issues of the EL Diamond show this.
  Edit -- EL started hauling plenty of UPS trailers during 1969 or 1970 out of Chicago.
   the NY Area UPS hub was located on County road across the street from the EL
   Croxton/Seacaucus Pig Yard.
   before EL they came down the PC River Line mostly,and drove several miles to the hub.
   the New York City main P.O. was next to the UPS hub,but later they changed the name.
   EL got some of that traffic also.

It is mentioned on page 2 and other pages in the time line list that UPS entered into TOFC 1969 . This is an excellent reference to keep .

Wow that is a great collection of historical photos. I don't think I have seen any of them before and I hang around places like Hanks Truck Pictures all the time. Someone should send Trainworx the thread. I suspect they would love all that free research.

Ed, I would love to see that info on the package cars. I have been trying to pin down the sizes for years. I know they had at least two full sized ones (96 or 102 wide) but in trying to track down the smaller rural truck.

Tru-Color paints TCP-118   Providence & Worcester Brown is spot on for it.
