Boxcar Difference?

Can someone enlighten me on the difference between Gunderson and NSC Hi Cube 60' boxcars? I have looked at Spookshow's site at the pics of the LBF models and can't tell.

It's mostly the ribs. Gunderson has 9 narrow (except the 3rd rib is thick) ribs, the NSC have 8 ribs

The most notable differences are:

- The bracing around the door note how its straight on the Gunderson and follows the shape of the door
While on the NSC car it is angled and goes right down to the bottom of the car.

- The profile of the bottom sill, on the Gunderson car the cutout for the trucks extends to the third rib on the NSC car it extends to the fourth rib

- Like JMaurer1 mentioned The Gunderson car has a wide third rib, the NSC car has equal sized ribs (Some later Gunderson cars did have equal ribs)

- The door stops are in different locations, and the door rails are different lengths.

- The ends and roofs are identical (some CP NSC Boxcars had different roofs not modeled by LBF)

Thank for the info, guys. I picked up several of those boxcars at a train show and will be repainting them to TTX, Mopac, and UP. By the way, has anyone noticed the paint on those cars is a bit sticky? I'm not sure about the LBF models, but the Huberts blue and red cars for sure have a weird feel to them.

Nobody has mentioned how the ribs on the NSC car are tapered, being narrower at the top than the bottom.

The Greenbrier/Gunderson cars also have an eave strip that covers the tops of all the ribs, while the NSC car has the eave flush with the body side and the tops of the ribs are exposed.

And for good measure, here's a Trinity version:

http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=bnsf761114&o=bnsf

Superficially similar to the Gunderson cars, it has slight differences in the side sill profile but the most prominent spotting feature for the Trinity cars is the bracing on the ends, with much narrower end ribs compared to the other two builders, and the bottom horizontal ribs behind the ladders at a much closer spacing than the upper ribs.

I didn't even notice that! :) Thanks

This detail however is missing from the LBF model

I hope Intermountain brings these cars back from the dead some day - and improves their paint quality.

I agree, Gary. They are nice modern era boxcars.

The Trinity car pic was a good one to throw into the mix. I had never noticed the end braces were grouped together down low.

This discussion reminds me that I posted something about the 50' variants of these cars long ago:

Nice Summary on the different models. We see lots of the SRY cars through Winnipeg, Hauling Toilet paper from a plant in BC.
