I love that life sized bridge!

Here is a view of the rough layout of the roads. Two lanes I-694 south, two lanes I-694 north and Soo street ( barely visible ) to the right in the picture.

Will be a signature scene for sure. On both the proto and your model, it looks like a truck with overinflated tires could catch the bottom of that bridge, of course, leading me to think you could add a humorous twist to the scene by ripping off the top of the semi......but maybe that's just me.

In the prototype picture, it's forced perspective making it appear as close clearance.  But, look at the truck on the right.  It will clear with a lot of room to spare.  The truck on the left is just a lot closer to the camera than the bridge.

Since I can't say it better myself:

I love that life sized bridge!

What struck me first is that how much like an actual bridge it already looks like. Something about how everyday and normal it looks combined with the size really struck a chord, it's not something that is modeled too often.

Might have to go for a drive and check out the real thing soon, I know I've driven under that bridge plenty

In the prototype picture, it's forced perspective making it appear as close clearance.  But, look at the truck on the right.  It will clear with a lot of room to spare.  The truck on the left is just a lot closer to the camera than the bridge.

It's closer by a bit, but also has a higher cab and trailer vs flatbed loaded with lumber, which is also higher.

I understand it would be a colossal engineering failure to build that bridge too low, but also suspect it was built a while ago, and there has been a push to get trucks bigger, to just fit normal clearances.  Kudos to Wyatt for the overall feel being just right.  That 2" foam is about 26 N scale feet above the other road, and about 17, which is normal clearance, to the bottom of the structure.  Makes me want to use Wyatt's leftover 2" foam sheet to create similar grade on my new pike, hint, Wyatt, hint.

I have the railings that I need to soak in bestine so I can put those on. I plan on making the bridge pilings out of basswood. Here are some sample/test shots.





I know these are not the best,, just something I threw together. I used 3/16" and 1/4" square basswood. I need to noodle on a way to make them square, straight and plumb. Some of the pilings also have a bottom piece that spans the gap from column to column.



After seeing the mock ups,, with the proto pic,,, looks like mine are a wee bit small.

Jeff.. I would have to charge a transportation fee.

I would try to talk you into using square styrene tubing to make those piers.  That's what I did to scratchbuild the abutments and piers on my highway bridges.

Well there has been more progress.

I was able to get all the track laid for the Cardigan Jct section, sure does look purdy!!




After making sure I had all the blank tie spaces filled in, I was able to move on with the wiring,, complete!! Well sort of,, no loconet cabling yet or the accessory buss. But I will get that done.


I wired up the slide switches also, plus the heat shrink tubing.


Here is a shot of the ground throw. I am thinking about using the upright wire to make targets.


I was able to run a short train to test the wiring.

Just a little update,, installed the railings on the bridge,, which is also painted with Rust-Oleum primer for rusty metal.

Good innovation to use .040 styrene for the slide switch ground throws on foam, I had been puzzling for a way to do that myself.
