Ryan, if you haven't seen these yet, you might want to sit down before you click.

Greg is an active modeler on the Twin Cities, and worked for a couple rr's iirc.

Very nice! a little frustrating in what wasn't photographed lol...  :) No shots of Camden Jct but everything around it  :P

Here's a good shot of Northtown and Shoreham Showing some industry around the Wye (is this Foley wye?)

Thanks, Ryan. Happy to provide insight but I am afraid most modelers only want to build the layout and don't take time to understand the operations, so I'll bow out for now.

Rossford Yard I can't seem to find the switching charts I made up for the MNNR when I worked there either, but I do have them in my files.
If you are coming to the Twin Cities and want to meet some time I am now retired and living a bit south of the metro area.

You can contact me off site if you would like.

A few more resources that might help understand the area better.

The city of Minneapolis has started posting archive files to a flickr account. Starting near the bottom of page 3 are some aerial photos along the Mississippi that cover the area directly west of Shoreham. 1955 photos but help to understand the area some.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/mplsarchives/page3

Probably more useful is the UMN Borchert Map Library historical aerial project, you can narrow the decade down to what you want. Decent quality for a few areas I checked in 1960 near Northtown and Shoreham.

https://www.lib.umn.edu/apps/mhapo/

The only detailed Twin Cities terminal map I've seen is a reproduction one available from Como Shops, you find them online still.

You could keep going and going and never find and end to the great things that connect to this line. But it would be hard to build them all.

If you were to do the yard at Cardigan Jct. as one end of the layout and the old WC New Brighton Yard at the other end, you have interchange action, all the Arden Hills switching in the middle (I would build another module to get Int. Paper in there, but that's just me).

Using basic FreemoN guidelines (radii and centered mains), here is a very rough sketch of what you could build with marginal (not major) compression.

Karl has a good start to a design. It need correct track work and some adjustment for geography but definitely something you can work with.

I finished up the last couple LDE's that Wyatt wanted in his plan. Here's all of them in order from West to east. (hopefully it makes sense)
I left out Humboldt yard due to its complexity, for anyone keeping track at home it will be at the extreme west end.

Northtown/Shoreham

Wyatt,
How many more layout segments are you wanting to add? Those are a lot of space consuming scenes. While each one adds something, they also burn up floor space. Reality also has to translate into something you can build.

I didn't fill in the plan because I didn't know if that was the route you wanted to go. I know the track plan up there well, I've rail-fanned it often. I used to sit in the Caribou Coffee on Rice Steet and wait for trains to follow West.

Ryan,

once more,,HOMERUN!!!!

Karl,

I hear ya about floor space. I just walked through the garage,, had to get my copenhagen out of the truck,, any ways. I could probably push the limits to 8' x 20'-10". I would have the whole garage with the chariot not parked there.

The door to the house, that area is stuck a 6'. The white shelf in the pic is 6'. Now the area by the garage door can be pushed to 8'

I figured I would make a 45 or a 22.50 section to come towards the garage by the house door,, them maybe the same by the garage door. The turnback loops are a 90% go,, I will build them,, no doubt.

Is there or could there be a way to do something like this

or maybe this

thoughts?

I want to thank everyone for their input,, ya'll have been a great help. THANK YOU

Adios Wyatt

Well I got the shelf brackets up today. Maybe next week I frame some sections up.

Personally I think this option will work the best.

The more I look at Karl's plan the more I like it, and just to confirm what you're planning: this will be the permanently set up portion not the entire set up correct? so this could represent Cardigan to New Brighton and you'll have more sections to represent points west (or even south on the Minnesota Transfer) when you have more room?

Is that what you're plans are or am I way off base?

One thought I'm having is you could scenic your return loop/Staging yard to represent Cardigan jct. It would save you from having to build a space eating Wye and a space eating loop (two loops in fact since you would need one for each leg of the wye)
Operationally it would work the same with traffic from St Paul leaving the staging loop in one direction and traffic from Points north/east coming from the other.

Also I completely agree with Karl that a extra section/blob for the International Paper spur would be ideal.

Food for thought.

I can see it now! I agree with Ryan, I like the top one. As that peninsula is a dead end, it may work best to change the shape a little, but it will work well.

If you don't model the full wyes, you should be fine on fitting them. If you want to finish the scenes later, you can add more modules.

It would be cool to have the 694 bridges on the one leg of the wye and the 35W bridge in New Brighton. They will add a nice vertical elevation change.

EDIT:
How about something like this:
