From the photos posted on MB Klein, both the M1a and M1b have the extended lettering on the tender, and both also have train phone antenna on the tender.  The main differences are the pilot and headlight/generator positions. This would make the M1a appropriate for mid-1940s to mid-1950s, and the M1b for 1950s.

I'm getting one of each. Gotta go - time to check the USPS tracking progress.

Interesting...  Wonder if there was a difference between the ad art and the production run...or maybe I was looking at their HO ones.  Oh well, I'm happy with two M1bs!

I originally ordered an M1a and M1b and then changed to 2 M1b's when the post-war description was added.  I will probably order an M1a as soon as my wallet recovers.

Pretty? She's got a blunt face, lopsided boobs (domes), and thick legs.  :D  She does have a flat belly (Belpair firebox) and a huge tender (a$$).

Since @basementcalling asked.... As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

M1a and M1b for me!  :D

Let's share our favorite photos of the M1a/b's so we can accurately weather them!

Just got my pair so...uh in maintaining alignment with our SPF goals of never being satisfied, here's my first complaint!
So, uh...these have dummy couplers up front. Which LOOK GREAT...but since I wanted to doublehead these...gotta find a solution.

That ONE thing aside...these are magnificent.

I have 2 coming, and I'm not even a SPF. Both early, one undec for possible use of the mechanism for another project although after looking at these pictures, I could heavily weather the Undec and you would never know. I can't see lettering anywhere but the Keystone on the front on those.

And what looks like a CA fingerprint:

Oh yeah, and these run great and super slow. Worth the wait? YOU BETCHA. I'd order 200 more if money was no issue.

hnnnnnnghhhhhhhhh that Keystone on the smokebox of the M1a looks like the numbers are smaller and resembles the Bachmann plate.

STILL MINOR GRIPES. STILL WORTH IT 100%.

I don't think there's a backup light either.

So, the website says there should be a backup light, but at Klein's today, when testing both the A and B, there was no light on when reversing.

Were you running in DC or DCC?  Perhaps that makes the difference.

Dummy coupler?!?! Noooooooooooo!

 :D

Like you said, @chicken45, minor annoyance, but one that I will have to address.

Mine are still showing "Out for Delivery". I don't know how much work my employer is going to get out of me today...
