Thought I'd pass this one along from a YouTube channel I subscribe to: NSmodeler24 .  How to Renumber a Factory Painted Locomotive.  I have not seen this method discussed before.  Also, I have not tried it myself, but I will let the video speak for itself.

New one on me! Can't wait to try it on the older Katos in my fleet. The lettering then was not the best, and my one attempt to remove it with the alcohol + eraser method was less than happy.

Great tip. Thanks for posting.

Interesting.  He didn't indicate that you should wait any specific period of time after applying Micro Sol to penetrate the ink (before drying it off).  He just brushed it on and then off right away. I find it hard to believe that in those few seconds the ink bond to the body shell would have degraded enough to be peeled away.  But maybe Micro Sol is that potent.  :?

Pete,

I heard him say to keep it wet for five minutes by reapplying it as it evaporated.
Also thought I might bump into yesterday down at Ernie's while operating on his layout or maybe even over at Rand's.

I sure have selective hearing as I watched the video twice, missing the "5 minute" thing both times!

I would have liked to run trains at the Railrun but I wasn't around.

I have used a similar method on several N scale locos using Walthers Solvaset. Brush it onto the numbers and rub with a cotton bud and the numbers will come off. Might leave a slight shinny surface however you can add your new decals and then a touch up with Dullcote. Jobs done.

I'm gonna give this method a try to renumber my Athearn N-scale Big Boys & Challengers.  Looks pretty simple and I assume Athearn is using the same ink/paint to pad-print their N-scale stuff as their HO models.

I'll find out in the next couple of days!

Cheerio!

Cool.  Thanks for sharing.  Info on a similar technique can be found at https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=34986 .   I've done this successfully on several dozen pieces of rolling stock at this point, but utilizing tape is an interesting and potentially very useful variation that I'm looking forward to testing.

I remember that thread Doug - it was a somewhat similar method from the guys at Athearn.

I attempted using this method tonight.  Tried it on an MT car and an Athearn car.  Maybe I didn't use enough solution, or didn't leave it on long enough but it didn't budge numbers on either model.  :? :(  On the MT car, I ended up just scratching the number off with an xacto blade on one side.  I will attempt again later this week, will be sure to check a clock when I try again.

^ I can't get the lettering off the MT heavyweights.  I ended up soaking them in 90% ISO.

I have had no problems using 90% ISO on Kato and Atlas lettering.  Let it sit, and start rubbing with a Q-Tip.  Reapply if it doesn't all come off the first go round.
