But this one (posted in my original post) looks blue to me.

Hmm... what's going on...?

That loco is black.

If this helps, here's the paint schemes from the 1960s into the 1980s on the N&W:

Paint Scheme     Era        Color
F-3                1963-66    Solid BLACK body with block-style gold lettering of
"NORFOLK & WESTERN" on hood sides and half-moon
(a/k/a hamburger) herald on cab sides and hood ends

F-4                1966-70    Solid BLUE body with block-style gold lettering of
"NORFOLK & WESTERN" on hood sides and half-moon
(a/k/a hamburger) herald on cab sides and hood ends

F-5               1970-71     Return to solid BLACK body with serif gold "NW" on
hood sides and half-moon (hamburger) herald on
                                     cab sides and hood ends

F-6a              1971-81    Solid BLACK body with white "NW" on hood sides
                                     and hood ends

So, what this means is that N&W GP35 Nos. 1300 and 1301 were delivered in the F-3 paint scheme, but it is possible that they could have seen a repaint into the F-4 scheme before being repainted into the F-6a scheme.  I would want to verify that with photographic evidence.  If in doubt, keep researching.  Otherwise, Rule #1 (it's your layout).

Got a date on this photo?  If prior to 1966, it can't possibly be blue.  And, since these locomotives were only delivered in late 1964, it's very likely they stayed in black until repainted into the F-6a scheme in 1971 or later.

No, no date.

Hmm... Kiz didn't have
many dates in high
school either...

Okay, well, then the most important question is: What era are you intending to model?  I know at one point, you were aiming for 1971.  Is that still the case?

Since I'm selling most of my cars, I decided to get rid of all the cars built 1970 and later. I sort of settled on modeling 1967, because all the cars I decided to keep were built in 1967 (one or two cars) or earlier.

On a note to further compound my indecision, I noticed that the lettering on the GP35 I first thought was blue was more white than gold. The Microscale decal sheet I have only has Norfolk & Western spelled out in gold. Rats.  What would Spock do...?

Hmm... probably model
1971...

They're supposed to be gold.  Go back to my previous post earlier today with the paint schemes.   If you're modeling 1967, it's more than likely these GP35s were still wearing their factory paint, i.e, paint scheme F-3.

Kis,

Occasionally the yellow lettering would fade to a "white".

In 1967 the lettering was likely still yellow. I have literally thousands of photos of N&W units - will see what I have on these rare N&W units when I get a chance later this week.

I could bore you with a list of units delivered in blue, but I wont. :P

Well, that settles it then. I'm painting the GP35s black with gold lettering. Thanks!

Hmm... yeah, maybe...
