New Shapeways material

From what I've read this new stuff works like this smart phone printer does:

The iMaterialise prime gray and the new shapeways material are similar but different. As far as I know both are printed from a tank of resin using light to cure and set the resin to produce the model. The difference is that prime gray uses a laser above the tank which is moved around and fired at the surface to do the setting of a layer before the build plate is lowered into the tank and the next layer processed. The new shapeways material uses a projector below the tank which shines light for an entire layer in one go and I think then lifts the part printed model out of the tank before doing the next layer.
 
No idea how the two compare for quality but the second is a lot faster

Seems like just about everyone who does 3D is getting something test printed. When they arrive there should be 1000's of photos floating around.

The rejected printing the Scenicruiser body due to the thinness of the window treatments, but I have two other items they're producing that have curved surfaces and will suffice in evaluating the new material.

Someone on a forum you need to be a member of to see got his 009 body shell back. The detail is sharper and the banding less noticeable, but a lot of his edges are warped and the cab walls sucked in at the center. You can see the parts were printed at a 45 degree angle just like a Form Lab printer does.

I received my parts today.  Two EP-3 truck frames and one set of I-5 driver centers.  The process definitely is smoother than FXD, but there are issues.  You can see in the photos that one side of the truck frames rendered cleanly, while the other side is over-smoothed.  On the driver centers, the detail is fine on both sides, but there is an extra support strand on each axle center that must be removed.  The material also has more flexiblity than FXD, similar to acetal plastic (delrin).

Truck frames rendered well. I will assume that the curvature especially in the lower of the two is a wide-angle/macro lens artifact.

I'm not a convert actually.  The top truck frame shows the soft-detail side, while the bottom truck frame shows the detail as I expected.  The drivers came out okay.  So, as with any of the other materials, it depends on the part being rendered.  It seems flat items are fine.
