I'm actually kicking around etching a set of pickups; for the axle cups, half-etch a locater dot for each axle, then punch with a nail.

I still have my doubts that 0.25mm material (stretched in the dimple) will be durable enough in a long run.  But I suppose it could be easily replaced as a wear-item.

0.25mm is 0.010".  I measured both Bachmann tender trucks and Kato trucks: they use 0.015" material for the bearing plates (50% thicker than yours).  But IIRC the newer Kato 3-axle trucks with sprung center axle do use 0.010" bearing plates, so I suppose that is sufficient. I guess I like to overbuild things.
