Oh yeah, Phase 3 would be nice, and plausible.

But the Phase 1 one  would be great for the PC era...

Hmmm, if MRL could have one, I wonder if the Idaho Belt bought one used for road power......

MRL never owned any SDF40-2's they had former BN F45s.
as for the ex Amtrak units with I believe one exception the final 17 were all scrapped when BNSF started purging their SD40 fleet in 2002. I remember a news feature in Trains that stated there was no market to sell them due to their non standard configuration...

If your railroad's mechanical department was willing to deal with cowl units I think it would definitely be a plausible acquisition.

The real question now is whether to get one of the first runs or wait for the inevitable notched-nose versions that the Kato Rep's like to tease us about...

There should be enough room in this to fit a nice sized speaker...

That sure looks like someone was thinking Coast Starlight... what a tease.
The second car is not supposed to be a sleeper, but maybe a better stand-in than some old Con Cor I was planning to use...
Maybe future releases include some additional cars to their line-up?

As much as I would like to power all my units with sound, it will just be the lead units that get sound for now.
For anyone else looking, I checked the TCS website, and the non-sound version of drop-in decoder is the K7D4.

There will be ESU LokSound DCC and sound equipped versions of the SDP40F's available from Kato also.

They did the same with the FEF3. I would call this a "Kobo-light" offering: sound decoder custom-installed, without any added "Kobo-style" detail parts.
