Well John, nothing is simple
I tried multiple times to reset the decoder per instructions, but it won't take CV 403 from my NCE cab. The screen just resets when I hit enter. I even tried a different cab to make sure it's not a faulty button. It seems to take other instructions fine, just doesn't like CV403 WTH:?

Did you try programming on the main (ops mode programming)?  I have a Digitrax Chief, but I made these changes using Ops Mode programming (programming on the main).

If all else fails: do you have someone nearby with a LokProgrammer or a Digitrax system?  If not, I have a LokProgrammer and would be happy to fix this for you if you want to send me the loco.   But try Ops Mode first if you haven't done so already.

Otto,

Are you a member of the NCE Yahoo group?  I'm seen Dave Heap (Aussie NCE/LokSound guy) mention that there is a bug in one of the NCP cabs that prevents it from programming CV's above 256.  Or something like that.  I'm a Digitrax guy and I just didn't know enough about the different NCE cabs to know what he meant.  If you can use a version of JMRI (Dave Heap did the programming for the LokSound section) above 3.11 then it should work.  Otherwise I can go look and see if he posted a workaround.

It is possible that NCE is not capable of programming high number CVs.  Or maybe newer firmware version of NCE cabs enables that capability?  How old are your NCE system?  Have you ever upgraded its firmware?

I also seem to recall that when I skimmed over the full ESU manual, there was a way to program those CVs using a different method.  You write to few other CVs to get the data to the high number CVs.  You should be able to find those instructions in that manual.

Wow, what a quick response, thank you guys!
Yes I did try programming on the main, it's my preference anyway for all my programming.
You may have a point about my old NCE's unit capability...I do have the eprom upgrade chip but I haven't installed it yet (unfortunately I will lose all my many macros when I do that and will need to reprogram and reset other things as well, not something I'm looking forward to). Thanks John for your kind offer, truly appreciate it, but I'll take a rain check at this point, it's not a big deal and I need to upgrade my system one of these days anyway...I suspect that's the problem here.
Kind regards, Otto

Just for more documentation I looked in the back emails I had and the bug only affects the NCE Power Pro.  When modifying CV's greater than 256 there is a bug which offsets the CV modified by 1 (I imagine the firmware assumed some offset was 0-based when it was 1-based - Peteski will understand that).  Dave Heap set up the JMRI code for NCE systems to workaround that somehow. I haven't found that yet.

Bottom line is that I think if you are using the Power Cab you are okay, but if your command station is the Power Pro you might be getting bit by that bug.

 :D

So there is no PowerPro firmware update to fix that bug?

That might be it; I use Pro Cabs. But I do have a good friend with a Power Cab, I'll try that next.
Thanks guys!

That is pretty current. I just picked up version 1.65b at the Springfield show.

I got my B&M in the mail today. Just ordered the correct vents for it, maybe I should have checked that first

These things are very intricate.
