Does N scale have a Pig Palace 40' stock car , decal , or does one have to cut out the logo boards on the 86' Atlas NP Pig Palace stock car ?

Wow, that's a chillingly difficult way to do it!

I can't find a good prototype picture, but based on model photos it's got a white background, right?   It looks like if you could just find a good prototype image you could use Photoshop to cut it out and print it on Micro-mark white laser decal paper.     They do have it and it works great.  Check this out:  http://www.randgust.com/Clim182610.jpg  That's laser-printed on white for the "Climax Locomotive" placard on the cab side - lifted off a black and white photo with Photoshop.  That way you don't have to print white on an ALPS.   The white laser material isn't like the rubbery inkjet material at all, it's a  lot more like regular decal film and Solvaset snuggles it down rather than messing it up.

Did the same approach for my circus flatcar decals, just printed red on clear material.

Given that, Richie, just PM me and tell me a size in N scale inches.   Next time I'm printing decals I'll throw it in the batch.

Thanks Randy and Bryan , That white decal paper is a great idea , I may even have some on hand . The decals I made for trailers came out splotchy and faded , almost pre-weathered .  I will have to figure out if the MTL stockcar is what I will use , then size the logo-board . I bought that 86 footer thinking it was a custom build , and not rebuilt auto parts car . I saw that roofwalk and thought it was built in the late fifties , oh well , I will keep it ( once it gets here ) as I think it looks cool .

Isn't a decal a lot more complicated than this needs to be?

There are plenty of good prototype photos of that placard.  Since it is a freestanding placard, couldn't you just scale it, print it out
on nice clean white cardstock, and then glue it on the car?  Overspray it with a few coats of Dullcote if you want to protect the ink.
Or if you want more rigidity, just glue the paper onto a thin .010" styrene rectangle and glue that on the car.

What am I missing that makes a decal important here?

According to my limited sources, there were two versions of the Big Pig Palace.  NP 84200 was built in 1964, from two 40 ft stockcars, and came with a roofwalk.  That's the prototype for the Atlas model.

The production models, 84300-84321, were built by Ortner(?) in 1966, did not have roofwalks, and had short ladders and low brakewheels.  So, if one wants to be accurate, one can only have one of the Atlas cars on the layout.  Whether there were any other differences between the two cars I have no idea.  If not, it wouldn't be hard to kitbash the production cars from the Atlas car.

I wonder if Atlas still has the tooling for these cars?

" it wouldn't be hard to kitbash the production cars from the Atlas car."

The 40 footers were custom rebuilds from boxcars 2/1958 . They had a unique slat design that needs to be scratched . They also look a bit higher so the roof may need to be raised . IIRC the HO Train Miniature car had silver lettering . Lots yet to learn about the prototype including the semi circle behind the pig . Was it tan , yellow , light red , pig pink , or orange  when new . Nothing is easy once you dig baby dig .

I agree nkalanga
edit , Now I am thinking the easiest way to do the car itself is to take an 85 foot stockcar and section out what I need because the 85 footer shares the same or very close slat and rib design as the 50 , plus the double doors . I nailed ebay again 'cause I still want an 85 footer as a keeper . Oh and that semi circle is the pigs body  :RUEffinKiddingMe:

You can cut the 85' car down to create a good 40' version of the Pig Palace.

Thanks also for someone confirming the model is of the stretched 40' cars.  That explains a lot... as the tooling doesn't precisely match the photos I've seen, roofwalk notwithstanding.

I guess I didn't take a photo of the 40' car.

This is the basic cuts . However the car needs to be addressed on the other side as it has 2 logo boards . I think bisecting the car longways through the roof is harder than logo board c section . Roofwalk needs to be added . Time will tell . Oh the big in the logo needs to go as does that much extra logo board height .

Not the Atlas car

I can't believe that was 2009!  I haven't completed that car yet.  I have been waiting on decals too.  My friend Michael has the artwork done but have been trying to get the best method to do the orange.  Very tough on the alps.  I have gathered a bunch of the old 85 footers to do more conversions and the next one I do I'll try and post in progress pictures.  It basically involves cutting it into two "L" shaped pieces consisting of an end and a side with the roof attached to one of them.
