When MT first announced this car there was quite a discussion on the Espee yahoo group about this car following no known SP prototype. So, it is possible that this car is a blend of SP and other road's horse cars, so it maybe not quite anyone's car.

Well, if you want to get picky, maybe you could get Roberto at M&R to run some more (unless he still has a couple in stock) 70-BH-3 sides http://n-scalevarnish.info/M&R/60-174.jpg

Or do the ATSF car (comes with the end doors, but will need a coach or shortened sleeper, as these ATSF cars were converted from coaches) http://n-scalevarnish.info/M&R/60-134.htm

Looks like to model this we would have to change the doors to 2 and 3 window versiona, add vents above the doors, and possibly an ice box or something in the center.

Perhaps @Lemosteam could be of assistance with the doors.

Well, the cat's out of the bag, but what kind of a cat is it?
An SP 70-BH-3, rebuilt into a B-70 baggage car with windows blanked out??
It actually looks like the Arizona Museum car, but for that it's 10' too short...
Something generic enough to stand in for other cars, like Pennsy?

Well, after consulting the book.. Southern Pacific Passenger Cars, Volume 3: Head End Cars. The MT car is "NOT" an SP car. At least not a 70' car. 70-BH-1's and 70-BH-2's have Harriman round roofs. The 70-BH-3 have clerestory roof and were built by Bethlehem. The upper "corners" of the door openings should be curved. Not the right angles depicted on the model. All of the 70-BH series of cars had a small window on the outside of the two end doors.  Now - all of these details are as delivered. The details of this car more resembles the 80-BH series of cars. So, looks like I will have to pass on this car and wait for the Wheels of Time car. For a more accurate model.

And - this was just a quick glance at photo's of the SP cars. I have not gone into a real in depth comparison.  As these details are big enough. I'm sure there are more inaccuracies.

Now, my question to Micro Trains is.... what did you folks go by to come up with this model-?

Has anyone compared this model to their roads cars- ?

Only L&N had cars that were similar... many other roads that had horse - express cars had the center door, well, centered on the side.

On the L&N cars (which are similar although rivet pattern may be different based on published photos of pre-production car bodies), does anyone know if they have end doors?  I've only succeeded in finding a couple pictures , both of which show a standard car end.  But, of course, that is of limited value, as they don't show the same car from both ends.  There is a paragraph describing the cars in The Pan American Era, but it doesn't mention end doors.

I understand that the L&N HS had an article in the Dec 2012 "Dixie Line" on horse-baggage cars, but do not have a copy of that.  Anyone know if it has drawings?

I figure it's all good in any case- if I need to change the end out that is not a major undertaking, and can always use the end doors on something else.

If and when the car becomes available undecorated, I will pick up one or two to use as cores for ATSF 1891=1899 series end door baggage cars (the sides being very similar if not identical to the ones M&R makes for ATSF 1800 series baggage cars).
