I guess this is new tooling.  I don't think anyone has mentioned them yet.

I preordered a couple.  The first pic  is even one of the Athearn numbers.

Isn't this like the 6th release of theses not including a weathered release?

It's existing tooling.  Unfortunately, no undecs anymore, which had all of the roof variations for kitbashing purposes.

It seems that Athearn will do undecorated kits on the first run of a car but that's it.  Maybe they could be talked into an every 10 years situation.  The Rocky Mountain train show is next weekend which they've attended before, if they are there, I'll mention something.

FWIW, Exactrail sells PS bow-tie, Diagonal panel and X-panel roofs for kitbashing / 4 for $10.95.  I purchased the PS roofs when I acquired four Southern waffle side boxcars to correct the incorrect roofs applied by the factory.  They are "overhanging" roofs if that matters.  Thanks.

The Stanray diagonals are the toughest of the three, as a limited number of manufacturers make it as a separate part to their models.  The bow-ties and X-panels seem to be more prolific on models that have removable roofs.

I don't know how I missed the previous releases, I thought I had clicked on 'View Retired Models' but apparently I somehow did not.

This is at least the second release of previous tooling where Athearn now says the couplers will be body mounted.  Hope those are not copy/paste errors.

FWIW, Athearn generally seems to have parts available, at least they have for my last 3-4 requests.  They aren't super cheap, but at least they have them.

I suspect that they don't run undecorated models because they don't sell enough of them. Honestly, how many modelers paint and decal their own hoppers anymore?

I don't know about hoppers, but these are boxcars.   :)
