The little shallow-housing one on NP #1070 in that picture?  Ha ha.  No way.  I'm lucky that SP&S #4 (the one I'm building) had the bigger deep NP style headlight.  That at least gave me room to work and put the LED in there!

Hi folks.

Today's entry is leaf springs, domes, and the stack.

And now, the domes and stack...

Very nice Max. To go with your extreme talent you also have a "right on" mind.

 Thanks for posting.

No springs for the rear axle?

I'm guessing in real life the rear springs are under the frame. (or between)

No springs for the rear axle?
A frequent arrangement on an 0-6-0 or 0-8-0 was for the rear driver spring to be installed between the top and bottom rails of the frame behind the rear driver as shown in the NP L-9 drawing back on page 1 of this thread.  That drawing also shows a mounting plate for some apparatus that would obscure the view of the spring - at least on the right side of the engine.  Of course, the photograph of SP&S No. 4 doesn't show that plate but is at such an angle that it is difficult to visualize the spring.  This arrangement appears to be fairly common based on photographs in the 1925 Locomotive Cyclopedia.  The USRA 0-8-0 drawings show this arrangement while the USRA 0-6-0 was an exception as the front of the firebox was far enough back to give room for the spring above the driver.  Switchers with very narrow fireboxes (i.e. between the frames rather than above the frames) also had room for the spring to be above the frame as on the front two axles.

Cheers,

Thank you, everyone!

And yes, there is a rear spring, but it is to the rear of the rear driver and completely hidden by frame and some sort of "apparatus" (good word for it!), on both sides.  So I did not model it.

Oh, and narrowminded, YES, those domes and stack added about 3.5 g to the engine.  It is just a hair short of 50g now (the engine alone).  By comparison, a Bachmann 0-6-0 or LL 0-8-0 (unmodified) weigh in at around 46g.  I'm surprised that it doesn't weigh more with all that brass and tungsten in it, but that's what it weighs.

PGE_Modeller and Max:  Thank you.  I didn't think they'd build a steam loco with an unsprung axle, but given some of the oddities that were built, someone might try it...

@mmagliaro,

Just incredible work, Max.  You are an inspiration.

Out of curiosity, how is the balance of the locomotive over the drivers?  Nose heavy, rear heavy, or balanced?
