I agree with the others that you should use the manufactured treadplate or decals to fabricate the necessary part(s) for your locomotive.  Even if you do, you're still going to have to build the necessary parts and install them.

In my case, I used styrene brick sheet to build my station, but I still consider it a scratchbuilt project.  Except, I did cheat and use commercial windows and doors.  :P

Peteski:

But the logic I see in the recent posts here, is irrefutable.  You have "Mr. Spocked" me.   And I thank you for this.
Jason (wcfn100), your point is well taken.  There is no difference between using Archer rivet decals vs Archer treadplate
decals.

So I think I'm going to cut a piece out of my etched BLMA treadplate stock and be done with this.

I think a more proper goal should be to make everything by hand as much as possible, unless I cannot make something
that is at least close to the quality of a commercial part.

I'm glad that I was one of the people who were able to "Mr. Spocked" you.  :D  I'm really happy to see you making a logical decision and abandoning what I perceived as illogical self-imposed limitations.  Even wits some commercially-made parts your model will undoubtedly the "most scratchbuilt" N scale Steam loco model.  ;)

True.  And remember, the real goal of these projects is to push myself to see what is possible and what I can learn to do that I have not done before, and I am not unhappy about that aspect of this engine at all!  :)

Just an idea - you can burnish .001 or .002 brass sheet over GMM etched tread pattern stock. This would give you the "did it myself" chops as well as making the tread pattern slightly more subtle than the exaggerated GMM material. I did this with aluminum foil when building fire trucks with a lot of tread plating.

Chris also suggested this.  But I decided to just go with the BLMA sheet.

Thanks everyone.  Yes.  It does look better.

You could've always etched some yourself.

Or burnished it down on a file.

Etched yes, I thought of that.  But that's just another skill with a learning curve I haven't gotten around to yet.
I've done PC boards, but not photoetching of brass parts.

But BURNISHED IT DOWN ON A FILE!

NOW YOU SAY THAT?  :D

Seriously, I bet that would work and make a much finer pattern.  I'm not pulling this up now.  But I will try that
idea for the sake of curiosity to see how it works.

Good suggestions always come out after you finish that part.

There is very little difference between etching PC boards and brass frets of parts. Especially a very basic single-sided tread plate.

I like the looks of the finer tread plate - nice job Max!

I know, I'm the worst. Sorry!!!

I figured you might want to try it, just so you could say you could.

I've probably mentioned this before, but only when Max's hand appears in the photos does one get a sense of how small it all is...which only serves make his work all the more remarkable...

Happy New Year!

And to start off 2017, here's the next installment of the SP&S 0-6-0 project.

Fun Facts:
- It has now been 2 years, 3 months since the very beginning of the project.
- I have not lost weight or needed any psychiatric care as a result of this!
- I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

I've been working on all the appliances and major detail parts for the tender in this phase.

On to the photos...

And here's a little super-compressed history of the project from the beginning...
