I'm also at a loss for the correct words  :o

I thought the 8mm motor was all that would fit, but now I see tungsten all around it. There really should be an N scale comic book hero called Tungsten Man!

Even the tender floor is a work of art.

With 2 stages of reduction it the motor any louder than a 4:1?

You could do a whole book on this one loco.  :lol:

8mm kind of is all that would fit.  I could have pushed it to a 10mm, MAYBE, but 8 gives me the flexibility to
slide it in, shim it properly and then secure it with the set screws. That would have been a whole lot harder if my back was to the wall with a 10mm motor.  Plus, it REALLY needs the weight of the tungsten.

As for noise, nah, not really.  Two stages in a Faulhaber is like nothing.   I can still back-turn it (as in, I can turn the output shaft, which pushes the whole gearhead "the wrong way" back to the motor, and it feels like nothing is there!
Those gears, as you can see from the photos, are nothing short of amazing.  They are works of art themselves!
There's a tad more whine at full speed than before, but that's about it.  It's pretty darn quiet.

Something that I was wondering about is if the solder joint areas had any effect on the plating?  And does time sitting seem to effect performance of the nickel plated parts?  Or have you let it sit long enough to know? ;) :D

Max, That is some fantastic work you have accomplished. I can not wait too see you finish this, but the real treat is seeing your work in progress! Keep it up.

Max,  Your thread is simply fascinating!  Now that the mechanics of the little beast are mostly solved, I am really looking forward to the detailing parts coming up!  I spent at least an hour going through everything here again...yeah..."WOW" is an understatement!

Bob (and everyone), THANK YOU.
Believe me, it does mean a lot to me that you are enjoying this.

You are right that the mechanics are mostly solved.  The last two hurdles in that regard are:

a) Making nickel silver side rods with proper dogbone shaping to replace those brass temporaries

b) Getting rid of the temporary Kato tender trucks and making my own trucks, Andrews style side frames,
and turning wheelsets to go in them.  And all that has to get back to providing me with axle-point pickup.
If I wasn't on a mission to scratchbuild this all myself, of course, I would just use some MT or other Andrews
sideframes and graft them onto the Kato trucks. 

(b) is the one that's going to be the big hill to climb.

LOL!  I have a pair grafted up just like that in my spares box... But no... they are not allowed to be used
for this project, or I will lose my soul in the process.

That, Max, would be a high price to pay. That, and the fact I need my selfish fix following this amazing thread and I'm so looking forward to you tackling the sideframes.

A quick update.   This installment just covers the new "official" siderods.  I wanted to get this step out of the way before I start on the tender trucks, which will be a major, time-consuming piece of the project.

























Those micro hex bolt fitting are completely optional, but... they sure are cool.  Those bolt heads are only 0.5mm across (.020")

Out of curiosity, why not use a wider disk? I'd be afraid I'd sneeze and cut off the handiwork in two :D

Max, looking great!  Seeing that Dremel wheel against that siderod brought back some memories.

I shudder to think of the amount of detailing you will be doing on the boiler appendages (but i can't wait to see them.

A model for the ages.
