Hey,

I have slowly began to remove my temporary roads and add more black styrene, and I found this RDG GP40-2 on eBay.  I know that they were used for ore runs, but it will be used for one of the locals on my layout.  I will definitely be adding some more base ground cover to the layout.  What are some recommendations for gravel parking lots/roads?

Check out the Bednars series on John Pechulis Media - during the early CR days those RDG units went everywhere and did everything. We used to see them on Chessie and CR lines around D.C.
As for gravel roads, you can't go wrong with the Ed K. favorite - sanded grout...

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays and spending some time on their layouts.  I'm slowly adding styrene sheets for a road base, and I did pick-up Vulcan Manufacturing during MD Klein's Black Friday Sale.  I also picked up an Atlas DH GP38-2 in the blue/yellow scheme, so I'm continuing to build a roster of locomotives for that late 1970s early Conrail roster when they were still in their predecessor paint schemes.  BTW, Railfanning with the Bednars Volume 7 and 8 are a great resource if you're modeling that error.

Good Morning,

It has been awhile since I have posted because I haven't done much with the scenic portion of my layout.  I would like to work on the team track area, but I am hitting a creative roadblock.  I originally used Woodland Scenics fine gravel, but I didn't like the look of it.  I have temporarily applied some styrene in that area, but I'm looking for any ideas for this area.

BTW, I have narrowed down my focus to 1975-1978, and I have gotten rid of my rolling stock from after that time period.  That seemed to be a good cleanse because I really want to focus on a certain era, and that time period gives you some certain flexibility from a rolling stock perspective.

I was just gonna go to MBK on the way to your place and buy some Scenic Express items and dump the contents out.
Does  Kleins sell the right sized bags, or should in get em from the street guy at Chaps

I will definitely take a look at grout for that area.   I've also looked at using sandpaper for the team track area as well.  I'm just trying to prioritize what projects I would like to work on in the next month.  I did look at Dave Vollmer's offerings, but I've just rebuilt my roster with LV and RDG units.  My focus now is on freight cars from the 1960s/1970s and cars/trucks from that same era as well.

I decided to take advantage of the day off and work on the layout rather than complete "actual" work.  I thought about the 2 track team track, and I decided to narrow it down to 1 track.  The more that I looked at photos of team tracks during the time frame I'm modeling, the more that I realized that 2 tracks wasn't necessary.  So, I pulled up the extra true-track, and I covered it with ground foam and cinder.  I am thinking about looking into adding a fence or one of the Walthers foundation kits around where the ground foam is.

I like it. Although, now that you've done that, I should throw out the idea of "transflow terminals", although I don't think they had really taken off by your timeframe.

There's a timeline on Transflo's website here: http://www.transflo.net/index.cfm/about-us/. They claim starting in 1964, but it may not have been more wide spread until after formation of CSX.

I was thinking of something along those lines for my shelf layout.
