This is my first attempt with ground cover after 3 layouts    This will definitely be a work in progress!

I also completed my roster with a Life Like SW1200.  This has been in the works for awhile trying to find and buy one at the right time.

Thanks Ed!  I think the next thing will be to add some underbrush to that area.  My next focus will also be to create a more permanent system of roads, and add more ground cover to the layout.

It's always fun to start coloring things in.

I would still like to lobby for some elevation change to add some interest to your scenery.  Any progress on that front?

That is still something that I'm thinking about, but I'm more in the brainstorming with that idea.  While I was typing this, I was thinking of a ridge along the lower left hand corner of my layout.  That might be something to look at before the summer ends.

Nice progress! I have always enjoyed adding that first layer of ground foam and watching the layout start to turn into a miniature world rather than track on foam.

Hey,

It's been awhile since I posted something about my layout, but teaching and family activities (i.e. soccer games) have kept me a little busy.  However, I'm slowly adding ground foam to my layout, but it might be time to add some bushes and shrubs along the right of way.  I'm still contemplating what to do for my roads, but that continues to be a AWIP.  I've also acquired the following 2 units in the past month.

I've been fascinated with the LV for a very long time, but I have no interest in modeling the early 1970s.  After reading the USRA Final System Plan, I could "assume" that the LV could've been merged with another line or survived after shredding some trackage.  I decided to go with the Atlas GP38-2 and U23B as motive power because they were well in use with either CR or DH during the 1980s.  This now gives me the opportunity to run 2 jobs on a "given day" on my layout.  One job is a LV drill while the other job is a CR local.  If I ever figure out the best way to record an operating session on my phone, I would go ahead and post it.

2. Roads: I struggled with this myself, but eventually went with styrene (after many folks who are better at this than I am recommended it).

Anthracite Railroads in the 70s Volume 2 is the first DVD that I have invested with Mike Bednar as the narrator, and he paints a great picture of the LV during that time.  That's why I went with their most recent power from the 70s to add to my layout.  With regards to roads, I have white and black styrene along with a can of gray Rustoleum that I plan on using for my roads project.  I only struggle with the proper width for them.  The templates for my roads that I have on my layout are 2 1/4", but I wonder if that is too narrow or wide for industrial city streets.

Awesome. The rest are really good too. Get on the JPM email newsletter, they often have pretty good sales if you want to stock up.

As far as the street width. Go look at the real thing! Find the location you want on Google Maps, and measure it (based off of references if necessary). Remember, scenery, like all models, should be done based on photos.

Great start. If the threads from David K Smith's Trenton Transportation Co. micro are still up here, the man is a wizard at making styrene look like asphalt. He started off by scuffing it up with a sander if I remember correctly. That tones the sheen down and  starts the grey fading you see in roads...

Sorry it's not the focus of the shot but here's some black that I worked on with a palm sander and 600 (?) grit sandpaper.
