Water Tender Idea for Kato - DLMX 4219

Hi guys. I'm a new member, but long time N Scale fan. As a fan of western steam engines such as SP 4449, and UP 844, I was happy to see that Kato produced the two UP water tenders as part of its excursion train. It got me thinking, why not produce the water tender (DLMX 4219) used by SP 4449 as well? There is already a large amount of Daylight equipment made by Kato and other brands to accurately model various excursions, and the engine is just as, if not more popular than the UP engines. Here is a reference photo by Jonathon Leese.

Are those friction bearing (as opposed to roller) trucks?    That would be handy.

Not sure about the trucks, however it was originally the tender for cab forward 4219.

Likely converted to roller bearing many years ago but kept the covers for appearance sake.  I am pretty certain that if it hadn't been converted it wouldn't be in use.  Note also the tender trucks... same deal.

So if it was a cab forward tender, would Intermountain be a better candidate to make it? Or does it have heavy modifications?

Someone on a forum told me to use the Bachman auxiliary tender from the 611, as I was asking the same thing , I rode the daylight tomchicago and that's the first time I seen that tender and wanted to make one for my gs-4 , I have a couple cab forwards but don't want to use the tenders from them , need to find actual docs and convert to 1:160 scale and compare to what's on the market. If anyone finds anything , I'm in.
Also need to do I think the name is little john or little boy steam generator car on the sp site.
That way we have everything they ran.

Thanks for that info. Getting a tender as a separate part would be a better deal.

Here's the "Little Boy" with my little boys in front of it in the Summer of 2014.

Sorry, had to add this one too with Doyle.

The 4449 auxiliary tender is pretty modified from the original cab forward tender.  611's isn't quite accurate but it's by far the closest thing you're going to find commercially available.  And personally, I rather like how it looks...

Well, given that this is such a tender subject, I offer the following photo of a build I did for a client a while back.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

A pair of Kato UP tenders in Daylight as 449A and 450A - complete with Let's Roll lettering on the flag car, along with the SP sunset logo.

They look great in his SP excursion consist, between the 4449 and a pair of Kato E units as diesel helpers.

If anyone else here so desires, I can complete this build again - PM me for details.

Hi All,

I did make a start on producing this tender, I was asked to do it by Phillip33 on Trainboard back in 2013!  So I guess I should finish it. :-) I have few other current projects to wrap up; including a new locomotive that will be ready soon.  Then I will sort out this long overdue tender; its been on my website as 'coning soon' for ages along with the whale back tenders!

To make my life easier if you could post up any other photos or reference material that would be great.  Jonathon Leese's photo is fantastic but having all sides helps with specific details and scaling.

And it looks like Justin (MRLX1020) does a great job in painting too.

:|       This Tender(I believe I' am Correct) is not a former Cab Forward tender none were saved , but is one of two former Western Pacific 4-8-4 AKA GS 6 tenders which survided in WP MW service one had been used with their rotary plow, I have photos of this tender painted black and marked "Keep Em Rolling" for use behind the San Berdino Historical Societ's Santa Fe 4-8-4 on a N.R.H.S. trip to Flag Staff AZ and the grand canyon.                        Nate Goodman (Nato).

NATO, according to the 4449 website, it says it is from AC-10 4219.

IIRC, while the planning for the 1984 excursion was taking place, there was talk of using the GS-6 tender owned by the Feather River Railroad museum. They assessed it, but for whatever reason they passed.

Little Boy could be made from an old Bachman baggage car  8)
