Josh's NCR Un-Shelved

A few months ago, I came to the realization that my NCR Shelf layout just wasn't working for me anymore.

While the foam benchwork worked, generally, it was hard to adjust and get to stay aligned.

I also realized that, with Windsor St's need to grow, the space was going to be rather awkward with it still on the wall.

So, with that in mind, I started looking for something to do about it.

Things came together when our own @chicken45 and I were discussing the tragedy of his lack of a layout.

We hatched a plan to build some benchwork for it, so it could be free standing, and move it to his house.

I'm excited to report that, as of last night, it's now up on its legs, completely assembled, and fully operational.

And a few pictures.

On the way to its new home:

It's now up to Josh to keep this post updated with more progress.

Layout swapping... It's just like the 70s.  Just leave your throttle in the brandy snifter to see which railroad you're going to go home with...

Josh,

If it were mine, I would have built the layout up on top of that foundation "shelf."  Not only would it be closer to eye level, but you could take advantage of that free square footage up there, which would enlarge the aisle.  The only problem would be the sump pump pipe, which the layout could go behind, although I suspect that pipe could be moved so that it turns and runs to the stud wall below the level of the shelf  Then, you would just divert it within the wall cavity to get back to the exit point near the ceiling.

Oh, and nice to see Ed also gave you his Christmas lights for ceiling lighting.   :D

Hope this helps,
DFF

@foxxy

That was what I thought too

However
Cleaning the back corner would be problematic.

I'm just stoked he has it up and running

Layout swapping... It's just like the 70s.  Just leave your throttle in the brandy snifter to see which railroad you're going to go home with...

Let's see:

Brian has my Virginia Central (and Ed's former kidney layout?)
Eric has Lee's WM Beastie.
Ed has Lee's WM yard.
Philip has Lee's Elkins portion of the WM (which was built on a HCD that I gave to Lee)
Josh has Ed's NCR layout.

Ew!

Also, Adam (@mu26aeh) also has the (Rockwood?) section of  Lee's too.

Randy Gustafson has my Potomac River crossing, Carhart also has two of Bernie's modules, that Andy and I picked up and delivered... and let's not forget Jerry's track... sort of the STD that holds all of our layouts together...

So true. I think a big chunk of the back of the "shelf" uses it.

Never did cash in on Jerry's fire sale.

If you haven't checked his blog on Keystone Crossings lately, it's worth your time.  Lewistown hawtness.

So Josh, are you going to keep it as-is or change season/locale?  I think it's also a good candidate for the Bald Eagle branch which was pretty damned busy back in the 50s.

For slightly less operational stress, consider the L&T secondary or the Montandon secondary (think Bellefonte Central interchange!).
