I spent a nice part of the weekend running on Joel Morse's New York & Ontario Western, an about to go bankrupt regional set in upstate New York in the early fifties. Milk cars, coal cars, regional traffic, lots of local switching, even a passenger train. Lots of traffic in one "day", probably more than on the real  thing. Good times...:)

The stone masons stopped by to lay the bridge abutment and the grain bin foundation at the Gunther Brewery today.

A little more work to do on the grain loader area... I really don't know how that will come together, but I have some ideas, such as a couple of silos and lots of little fine steel work...  I dunno.  We'll see what's laying around for me to work with.

Later the steel crew will arrive, along with the painters and landscapers!

Sweet Jesus, that is awesome John!  I'm going to have to get a Queen Mary car just so I can have a good resting place for that load.  But I sure hope that you make it hollow somehow, or it will cost an arm-and-a-leg on Shapeways (FXD)!

Speaking of electrical thingies, I might have to talk to you about possibly designing a large transformer for my Schnabel car from Elgin Locomotive Works (which is still in a kit form).

Chris333:  I also touch the solder to the iron, then put the iron to the tie, for track work.  Most larger work, the traditional method of heating the work, then touching the solder to it, works better, but for the cleanest rail joints even small electronic solder often melts too fast and produces globs.

For the stock rails on turnouts that can be an advantage, if the glob can be controlled.  A neatly done solder joint, with the solder up onto the web of the rail, doesn't look much different from the rail braces used opposite the points.

RE: solder joints on ties. You might try painting all the bare copper parts of the tie you DON'T want solder to get on. Pretty sure solder doesn't stick to paint, so you control where it goes.

Thanks John - I will.  I don't need this anytime soon - just making plans for the future.  But I know where to go now.  :)

No modeling for me this weekend, but lots of modeling inspiration as I attended the NMRA MER regional convention this past weekend. I attended 6 clinics and visited 8 layouts.  One of those was Rick Spano's S&U.  In a word  - wow! One of the clinics was about the DL&W concrete viaducts, presented by a curator at Steamtown. Several of the layouts drew praise from my non-model railroading (but extremely tolerant) fiancée.

We're now less than two weeks to the first weekend of Open Houses in central PA. My layout will be open Sunday the 8th; if you stop in be sure to introduce yourself!

OldEastRR:  Never thought of that, or read of anyone else thinking of it.  Oil or grease to contain solder, yes, several times, but then it has to be cleaned off. if the part is to be painted.  But painting first?  It does sound easier.  The ties could be painted after they're laid, with a base color, then the paint sanded off just where the rails will go, as the PC ties almost have to be lightly sanded anyway, to remove oxidation.  Add flux, solder the rails, then weather the rail and ties as desired.

Sounds like a good idea!

I wouldn't use a latex paint, though, as that stuff burns.  Stick to the traditional petroleum solvent paints, they can take higher temperatures.

I've been to Rick Spano's many times. Well worth the ride from anywhere.
