It means it didn't start out as anything else, it was build just the way you see it.  The MTL car by road number is a Tk-S.

bbussey did a kitbash using a couple MTL tanks that would get somewhere in the neighborhood.  I think he has a picture up on one of his personal sites.

I have the plans for a 19,000 gallon car that would be a decent stand in.  I started some work making a kit but my machinist has been hard to get time with.

Tank cars might be the most under represented of all freight cars in N scale when it comes to trying to build a prototypical train.

The Tk-N is closer to 16,000 gallons I think.  But a 19,000 gallon might be closer than anything out there.

Maybe on my next print I can throw in a section of the tank to see how it renders.  I'm under the impression that the stepping would be awful.

Per Occhiello's Live List, the ATSF Tk-N is listed as a 48' 16k gal blt in '49 by GAT per ICC 103.  250 in the series, numbered from 101100 to 101349.  Only 40 were still around in '91 (the last year listed in Occhiello's book).
If you wish, PM me your addy and I'll mail you a hardcopy (from several given to me years ago - taken straight from original drawing # T-12 from AT&SF folio 211-4).

Can't quite make out the road number, but if you have it, and it's not in the above series, provide it here and I'll look up the class for you - and see if I have that drawing as well.

BTW, that solid light gray banding denotes this car was used for diesel fuel.
