Hi Bob,

Thanks for the comments! I actually know of a product that would be very fitting for what you're looking for:

http://store.sbs4dcc.com/SBS4DCCNScaleTwinBeamSealedHeadlightLens.aspx

I know these are flat etches but they would be a lot thinner around the edges of each sealed headlight beam than I could print at Shapeways because of minimum thickness requirements. If you want me to try it, I can quickly sketch up a model of it and let you know how it works in terms of printability, all I need is the outer diameter of the light housing because I'm not sure what it is on an NW2.

Alvin,
I do have some of those etchings from SBS4DCC and they might work, but like you said they are flat etchings with no detail and are too small in diameter to use any currently available early Pyle headlight casting that I know of. My calipers are showing a required diameter of about .097-.098 for the Kato NW-2 headlight, with a required thickness of the plate of about .012 to look good. They might be a better candidate for etching, but then you'd have square edges and not rounded like the prototype, although the thickness of a printed part could probably be sanded down. Thanks for your efforts.
It sure would nice if Arnold would make some parts available from their SW-1.

Bob

This is a similar headlight treatment from the old Atlas/Kato RS-3.

I'm thinking that instead of a thin casting which sits on the surface, why not make it as a plug which gets glued into the empty large headlight lens opening?  Of course you first have to remove the original large clear "lens".

A plug would technically work, except I'm not sure on the Kato NW2 because the light pipe piece for the headlight is integral to the tiny side numberboards. A way this could be potentially solved is drilling out the center slightly to lower the face of the light pipe, and inserting a plug that isn't full depth (but deep enough to print) and drilling some holes through that for 0.040 acrylic rod to light the actual sealed beams.

I'll see how it looks in SolidWorks...

Update: Looks like it could potentially work.

The whole piece will be at the minimum printing thickness so hopefully it won't reject when it gets ordered.

Its 0.6mm for a unsupported feature (the entirety of the disk in this case) so right over 20 thou, which is thicker than you measured but I think I can hide part of it with the edge fillet.

I just thought of some little changes to incorporate, let me make a few little changes to it and I'll update the model again tonight.

Yes Bryan, I got the information about the trailers, thanks. I've rough sketched out the side profiles of the trailers in SW but I haven't had time yet to revisit the details like exterior posts and the wheels.

Any progress in the etched parts?
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

Two new-ish products for this weekend..... Cab Headlight 3GS21B for UP and NRE units available in both the early round style fuel tank as well as the later angled tank.

I already have beta units currently in printing, but these uploads are further refinements of what I have ordered for myself.

Wow its been a while since the last update.

After some additional tweaks to the model and some additional prints, finally got the 3GS21B to what I would consider detailing ready. Hoping to get some UP paint on it when I get home at the end of the month.

A few new items I've uploaded over the past month:

Roof Mount Bell

http://shpws.me/MsYH

Safetran Signal Base

http://shpws.me/MfFJ

Short EMD Angled Filter hatch for GP38 and GP38AC

http://shpws.me/MsSm

Nose Gyralights for WP and DRGW

http://shpws.me/Mm5h
http://shpws.me/MmfX

And finally, to those that are still waiting on the PD5125 etchings, I promise I'm still working on them. It's just been a very busy few months and I've been held up by two other etching projects I took on before this, namely N scale CPL mast signal kits and different sizes of Sinclair antennas. But once those are finally out the door, I can get some test etches in.
