Ooh, that reminds me. I've got another good one since you're doing stuff like this (although, @Lemosteam might call dibs).

The conversion pieces for EL, PC and Conrail RS3ms.

There are two main styles, the later "easy" one:
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=177321

And the much more "charming" early one:
http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/sites/model-railroad-hobbyist.com/files/users/rphil/%24%28KGrHqR%2C%21rIFF0IQtmm%2BBRjuQ7ZIRQ~~60_57.JPG

Totally missed this earlier, for those conversions are you looking for just the add on bits that go on top (exhaust parts, window plugs, etc) or an entire long hood replacement?

How about pilot overlays with holes where the detail items are to go and the face of the prototype coupler box. I know your not doing Z but this would be good if you did (I have 10 locos that need this)start making Z parts.

I think I know what you are talking about but, would you mind taking a quick picture of what you mean by this? (also which specific locomotive models) I'm not too familiar with Z but I can take a look at what I can do.

The gap in the pilot is the area I am referring to. This particular one is on the MTL GP-9 ,but the GP-35 and SD40-2 have the same problem as do all of the AZL locos.I think it has to do with the layout in a briefcase mentality a lot of Z scalers are supposed to have.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm getting a head start on a lousy Monday.

No worries!

Just the parts that go on top, so we can take an Atlas RS3 and go to town on it.

Alvin, any chance we can see a Flexcoil sideframe replacement for the Atlas HT-C truck? This would be big for Conrail modelers - I have 4 engines that need to be replaced in addition to several IM SD40-2s on order.

Are the couplers currently truck mounted? (and are you looking to potentially switch to a pilot mount with this proposed pilot piece?) Is it possible that you could help me take some dimensions of the pilot on that GP9? I usually try and do my own measurements but since I don't do Z its kind of hard for me in this case.

I always thought the body mount pilots for the Kato GP38-2/50 and Atlas SD-9 was one of Micro Trains greatest innovations for n scale

He is willing to do it. Someone sent this man a Z scale loco so he can take some accurate measurements!  That would guarantee the best quality and best fit.  :)

The couplers are truck mounted the plan is to body mount them.I would be happy to send you a GP-9 and a GP-35 shell to measure yourself as long as I get them back once you are happy with your design work.

Alvin - how about some Superior doors as a a replacement part for the Fox Valley FMC 5283cuft boxcar?
Model:

Proto to suit:

Some of these cars were shopped and received replacement Superior doors:

and:

http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=34984

I'd use the nice MTL part but it's compressed

The FVM shell is one piece, so I imagine cutting out the original and dropping these in place. Thoughts?

Bussey did a nice plug door drop in recently, attachs from the inside of the car.  Just gotta get the intended model's side thicknesses right for it to "drop in" easily.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

I cannot speak to the effectiveness of an ultrasonic cleaner as I do not have one, I am sure it would work but I don't know to what degree. I just know usually for myself I dunk the parts in a glass jar of Bestine overnight, and pull them out in the morning and they will be ready to paint and glue. The roof section I linked earlier was prepared in this way.
I have an ultrasonic cleaner and I love it! I don't need any nasty stuff to clean my Shapeways FUD parts anymore. My treatment: fill the bath with warm water with dishwashing liquid. Run the bath once or twice (mine stops after 5 minutes). Then empty the bath, clean it with a cloth and fill it with warm water. Run it once or twice and leave the stuff for a few hours or even overnight. If the water is very cloudy, refresh it. Then just let it dry. That's all.
PS, the temperature of the water should be just above body temperature, if you can just keep your finger in the water without hurting yourself you have the right temperature. Too hot will bend, warp or melt parts.

Understood. I kind of have a lot of projects on my hands right now (competitive robotics season has also just started) so I'm not sure how soon I would be able to get to it if you sent me shells. If you want to help me by taking some dimensions of what you have, I would happily take a crack at it in SolidWorks and show you the result of what I come up with.

In this case, the things I am most concerned about are the width and length of the hole in the front pilot on the GP9 and would the depth just be the length of a MT 903 box? (and a mounting hole to screw that in?)

Alvin,
I need to find batteries for my digital calipers before I can measure anything. It seems that everybody and his brother sells the calipers in West Michigan, but nobody sells replacement batteries. Once I do that I can send you meaurements not only for the MTL locos but the AZL SD70s and GP38-2s.

All the digital calipers I have use the most popular 357/303 or A76 or LR44 battery - all interchangable. See  this cross reference info http://www.medicbatteries.com/battery-energizer-357-303-357-watch-battery-ag13-sr44-lr44

These are available everywhere, including supermarkets, home improvement stores (Home Depot, Lowe's), hardware stores, even pharmacies.
