@Mastertech, I do not have a scanner yet, but even if I did I probably wouldn't use it for small scale stuff. The reason is usually a lot of the detail becomes lost in the software trying to generate approximated polygons and I have found it much more effective to model items from scratch to not lose any of the detail.

The Bestine (rubber cement thinner) bath is to clean off all of the waxy support material that every item is shipped with. The process makes the items much easier to paint and glue, without the problems of wax seeping out later.

I cannot speak to the effectiveness of an ultrasonic cleaner as I do not have one, I am sure it would work but I don't know to what degree. I just know usually for myself I dunk the parts in a glass jar of Bestine overnight, and pull them out in the morning and they will be ready to paint and glue. The roof section I linked earlier was prepared in this way.

DON'T USE BESTINE IN AN ULTRASONIC CLEANER! OMG!!!!

Bestine (heptane) is highly, highly flammable, with an unusually low flash point (-4°C). It is basically a fuel, or can act like one. Ultrasonic cleaners work by micro-aerating the solvent medium. Basically you'd be turning the whole thing into a carburetor.

Bestine should only be used in a sealed glass or metal container. No plastics, as it will dissolve most common consumer grades.

Treat Bestine with the same care and caution as you would gasoline. In the context of Shapeways output we talk about it casually, but it is not casual, it is an industrial/commercial solvent normally used in a professional environment (by graphic artists). Definitely not marketed or packaged for household use.

Thanks for the tip Mike

I must have been mistaken, now that I think about it, from what I have seen people using an ultrasonic cleaner before, it was because they could not obtain Bestine and had to opt for something like warm soapy water as their solvent.

@GaryHinshaw All the way from the first page, I finally had a chance to measure up and model one of the octagonal antenna domes on a Kato AC4400; just uploaded it here:

Nice!  You're incredibly prodigious Wutter, thank you!  Orders will be placed, along with some PTC gear.  :)

More PTC goodies coming this way:

UP Type PTC Array

http://shpws.me/KFTU

PTC Dual Track Antenna

http://shpws.me/LghR

BNSF PTC Antenna Pack

http://shpws.me/Lgqi

All of these are available in higher quantities at a price break, just look under the "Antennas" portion in my store. If you want an even higher quantity than what I currently offer, just send me a PM, and I can make a special upload.

Cool stuff!

Any plans on doing the 12 cylinder version of the EMD 645?

I've long wanted to model a scrapped switcher.

Wutter
Just received my SP light parts in mail today, WOW i can't believe it! the detail on them are fantastic even under 6X magnification, I must say that I was little sceptical of the detail, that's because digital printing is still at a infant stage, and i've seen some pretty poor quality, but these parts stand out above all the rest even better than white castings>>NO FLASH<<
please keep up the good work, maybe we can detail these locos just as good as other scales, just need more parts.
MY suggestion>> need to make full detail EMD/GE pilot faceplates, hoses, lift bars brake lines, etc, etc  something has to be better than the BLMA etchings! and it'll make detailing a loco so much faster and easier with better detail.

I'll be back for more!!

I'm looking forward to all the antennae I ordered.  It will be my first encounter with FXD, but it sounds promising!

Thanks for the feedback, good to hear you like them!

Unfortunately, etched metal details will probably still be unmatched by 3D printing for a few years to come, at least until the printing size minimums are much lower than they are now. I am looking to start making some etched metal details myself at some point but right now I have a lot on my hands with Shapeways and custom signals.

How about pilot overlays with holes where the detail items are to go and the face of the prototype coupler box.I know your not doing Z but this would be good if you did (I have 10 locos that need this)start making Z parts.

Ooh, that reminds me. I've got another good one since you're doing stuff like this (although, @Lemosteam might call dibs).

The conversion pieces for EL, PC and Conrail RS3ms.

There are two main styles, the later "easy" one:

And the much more "charming" early one:

You might consider the reading pup conversion too.

Is that different than the LV SW8 "pup" conversions?  Cutting Edge has a hood insert for that...
