The lettering is clean in my source photo.
But I am curious too... You'd think this would weather like the rest of the car. I've seen more than a few pictures where cars seem to weather around lettering.

Hmm... I'm going to
weather my hopper
with Great Ape spit
and dirt...

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

I would guess the white lettering is chalking, and the result is that dirt and coal dust isn't sticking to it.

I'm guessing Tom is talking about the paint "chalking." That means the paint is weathering (turning to powder) and streaking down the sides of the car. See:

Hmm... Kiz is looking
kind of chalky today...

Wow! What a nice photo Josh!
@mmagliaro gave me some tips for my Nikon camera (it loves to take photographs).

Burnt Sienns and Umbers dotted on with foam and brass wire and wiped off a bit with some 70% iso.
I'm not sold on the larger patches just yet. Looking for advice. After the rust is corrected, I'll chalk the letters.

I totally forgot that I had said I'd participate...
I haven't even stripped the lettering off my of hopper yet.
With all the commotion with my Nn3 layout I think I might just drop out. I'm not exactly good at weathering anyhow.

Nailed it!  How did you get the lettering back to white?  Also, your spots...oils or acrylics?

Thanks, Dave! I think yours is swell, too! You said you were redoing it?
I used 90% iso and a small, stuff brush and just kinda rubbed it.
I use oils for washes and spots because Tom tells me to. And because you have a nice, long working time. They are forgiving. I saw Cody Grivno using oils and Turpenoid...because he didn't use the water soluble ones. I'm a big fan of these.

Yeah, I stripped mine.  Looks much more subtle.  I have 7 more MTL H31s to attempt, though!

Looks like I need to go down to Hobby Lobby again and get some oils!

Love the panel color variation, although some rust streaks down would be inevitable no?  I think some of those would convince me on the blobs as rust if they started at the lowest point of the blobs.  they don't have to be long, Tom's pic is case in point.

So, yes...I cleaned this up a little bit. The larger blobs look like spots instead of spots with lighter streaks. I don't have too many streaks overall because they weren't present on the prototype car. I think I'm ready to chalk!

Fooling around with Camera+ on my iPhone. I fixed up some of these rust spots.
