I'm curious as to why you would write a post like this?

Hmmm.. I thought you East Coast guys knew sarcastic satire. I'm very happy nobody is complaining about the K4 now that they have one. this forum does have a rep... on another one I saw someone comment about 18 pages of TRW arguments over this loco without any poster even having one in hand, something to the effect "what else do you expect from those guys". No criticism from me, nothing I read here ever gets me worked up.

So, to get back to my comment about traction tires, IF anyone has one can you confirm that there are traction tires on this unit.

The pics in the prior thread and the diagram both show a traction tire on the second axle. Joetrain59 image...

And now for a dose of reality.

Got my unit a couple of days ago.
Opened the box, no mention that this a "Spectrum" locomotive, at all.
(For those not familiar with this term, Spectrum units are the premium grade for Bachmann.)
Suspicions immediately raised.
Look at that boiler shell, Verne, there's a lot of paint on it.  Not a lot of detail on it, either.
Does have traction tires on the #2 drivers, though.









Actually, the boiler has about the same amount of detail as the 1970's Minitrix.
This is my loco, a Minitrix shell on a Kato C55 mechanism.  Before you complain too loudly, I realize that the C55 mechanism is not a historically accurate match for the K4.  Whatever.



So far, unimpressed with the looks.  Let's put her on the track and see how she runs.
Break-in procedure:  5 minutes forward, 5 minutes in reverse.
Easily pulls 9 heavyweight passenger cars on level track; will probably pull several more.
Sound is not too bad, either.  Could be better; maybe she needs a better speaker.

Now, let's check the slow speed performance.  Does not look too good.  Pretty "jerky".
Possibly not enough break-in.
Run the loco for another hour, fiddle with the valve gear, maybe loosen it up a bit.
Now check the slow speed again.  Run at speed step 1 of 128.


Clearly, something is less than perfect.
Put the loco in the cradle, upside down, and put the transformer leads on the tender wheels.
Hello, what's this.  The #2 drivers (the ones with the traction tires) wobble. 
How much?  A lot.  Imagine the wobble on your worst loco and add 20 percent.
Of course, Bachmann's parts department has no parts in stock.  No drivers, no parts of any kind.

Well, Verne, this one's going to be a shelf queen for some time.  Maybe a long time.

Was she worth $250?  You decide.

I wonder if there's a problem with the bearing blocks on the number 2 axle.  Might it be worth opening it up and rotating one of the blocks 90 degrees to see if that helps?

I will say this...  I plan to submit the warranty registration on this loco.  Usually I'm all about popping the hood and messing around, but with the price tag on this one, I'm probably going to restrict my tinkering to a minimum.

Mine's perfect, including slow starting and running, and no wobble. Sound is very good overall, and the chug and bell are outstanding. The three-chime air horn is more than adequate. I've seen two run, both are perfect.

I also have a Minitrix unit. The Bachmann unit is superior in all aspects.

Anyone done the standard MT 40' boxcar test yet to see how it compares with other models?

That is what I recommended to Gary - entire user-friendly DCC system in a throttle.  You can program and run DCC models.  BLW has the same item for $140.

1: Gee, I think it looks rather nice. Nicer, I think, than my 1970's Minitrix.
2: This is a high-stepping passenger loco we're talking here, right? It seems to be ok in the video; how does it look at speed?
3: I don't know if I own any perfect examples of anything, model trains included.

High-stepping or not, many modelers like to start their trains very slowly, then get to that high-stepping speed gradually. Real trains didn't just go from zero to 30MPH in an instant.  Smooth slow speed performance is especially important in models of steam locos with sound as that is where the chuffing effect is at its best.  I also enjoy looking at the slowly moving drive train - it is cool to watch the siderods and valve gear work.  Wobbly drivers will ruin this effect.

But since Bryan's models run much better (according to his post), seems like what we have is spotty assembly quality and poor quality control.  I would say that this is typical of .... (no I won't say it).
