Kato GG1 Traction Tires

So... MY GG1 also threw both traction tires also!
It was from one of the first runs.
I can't seem to find replacements. Would any other tires work?

Huh. It was out of stock last time I checked, which was last month. Either way, thanks! Now to buy a hundred of them to feel less bad about the $7. I wonder if I called them if they would just put them in an envelope.

When you put them on, put a little smidge of Walthers Goo in the groove first.  It's thick and unwieldy, but it's rubbery and flexible, and if you can get a neat little smear of it into the groove in a few spots, it will make sure that tire never throws off again.  Some people use CA or paint for the same purpose.

Can't you just reinstall them, or are the ripped?  They usually get thrown because the loco is allowed to spin the tires  while it cannot move on the track - the wheels slip (not something that would happen during normal operation).

I have had no trouble pulling the Broadway limited around on NTRAK layouts without the traction tire on my GG1. I have 3 GG1's. Two threw the tires after several miutes of running. I just took the them off the  third one before running it .

They, uh came off and I thought that means they were junked. They were kind of twisted a bit. I thought the tire may have gone bad.

TTs are like tiny rubber bands - if not damaged you can reuse them.

In my experience the initial run of Kato GS4 locos had traction tires which seemed a bit  too soft (stretched too easily).  When they released FEF3 they seem to have changed the material used on the TTs. They seem firmer now. Maybe they did the same to the GG1 tires too?  The new ones (for ACS-64) might be better than the original run. Just speculating...

Martin, NTRAK is a flat layout (no grades) with relatively wide curves. That is probably why your TT-less loco is able to pull the entire Broadway Ltd.  If there were grades (especially steep, like most home layouts have), it would probably start slipping.

 I had one come off the second time I put it on the track . Pushed it less than an inch and the thing popped off . What a PITA to get back on .....  Now I make it a habit not to push any loco with TT's even a fraction of an inch . The GG1's are a pain to rail with all those wheels .

A little off topic, but since this is about the Kato GG-1, can one of you fine gentlemen who own one do me a favor and measure the powered trucks' wheelbase? Both the individual truck (should be 13'8") and the two trucks' combined wheelbase (37'4"?). I'm thinking about a project and need to confirm the dimensions.

I don't know the proper way to measure wheelbase, but from one end to the other at their longest parts, it looks to be close to what you have there.
If this is a 4-6-6-4 loco, the "4-6" comes in around 37'5"

Because the axle bearings are outside of the wheels I'm afraid that you will have to disassemble the trucks.  Or just put the original tire back in the groove (assuming it is still floating in the truck.

 My tire just popped out , didn't break . Was still a PITA to get it set in correctly .

Thanks Josh, what I'm looking for is axle centerline to axle centerline for the outer powered axles on each truck, and the distance between the inner axles of the two trucks. I don't need the "4-6", I need the "6-6".
