I got an email from one fellow taking orders saying his distributor notified him that the K4's will be arriving tomorrow (at the distributor).  This puts it in line with BLW's saying they will get theirs early September.

How do you know you will need traction tires without having one in hand and testing....

If its anything like the MP 4-6-2, it would require tires. 6 High drivers, not a huge locomotive, diecast boiler only puts down so much force. So yeah I wouldnt be shocked it I find it wont pull more than 10 freight cars out of box. I do have snot on the ready.

One distributor says they will have them Sept 1 for shipment. Others a week or two later. Unfortunately, the distributor getting them early is not the one with the best pricing. I had not planned on this at all, might have to dig deep in the piggy bank to pick one up.

Be that as it may, the K4 does not have them.  I have no idea how many cars it can pull on a level or on various grade percentages.   Double-heading is fine, as long as a single K4 can manage at least, say, somewhere in the neighborhood of a 6-9 car passenger train up 2% grades by itself.

Max, that would be admirable. But I think we would be hard pressed to find a prototype 80" drivered Pacific that could take such a train up 2% grades unassisted. Six heavyweights, well possibly, nine most certainly not.... So maybe the decision to not use traction tires is the right one; time will tell.
Oh, I notice you didn't say heavyweights, but that what I see behind a K4 :)
Regards,
Otto

True Otto.
No way could a prototype K4 pull 9-car strings up a 2% grade.
However, rare is the layout that really depicts the grades and wide open spaces of real life,
so we generally need our engines to pull better than the prototype on grades, because we
usually have grades steeper than prototype.

What I'm getting at here is that even if the proto K4 couldn't pull 9 passenger cars up a 2% grade, I think a lot of people
will be frustrated if the model can't do that.

Trainworld sent out a flyer this morning. They are taking pre-orders for the new Bachmann locos.  The K4s is $229.99 ea which is the lowest I've seen.  I've already ordered through my LHS but I've bought from Trainworld twice before on other things and had no problems.  They also list the GG1 w/sound for  $199.99 and DCC @ $139.99  I imagine once the locos are in stock prices go up so don't be shocked if the price changes later.

Also, George Hollwedel (Prototype N Scale) reports his distributor (He doesn't mention the name) says the models are "flying out of there".  Take that however you please.

Ouch. I didn't check that. They are usually a little steep in the shipping costs. I usually wait until I have a bunch of stuff to order so it averages out the cost per item a little better.

Yeah. I put in my order at FRT, also requesting an autographed headshot of Chulvis.

That could be interesting.

Heh. Combined with the whistle, I somehow feel these test shots are related to the video below.
