Anybody try body mounting couplers on ER Models Sharks

Have a set of NYC Sharknoses and was wondering if anybody had tried to body mount MT couplers on them. Looks a little tight in there.

I think I used Unimate knuckle coupler - not the same as MT, but it's a direct replacement for the Rapido shank. Another option would be the MT universal which is glued into the Rapido box.

I believe I just dropped a Unimate into rear coupler box on A unit, and forward end of B unit for close coupling between units. I know I put an MTL on pilot of A, and of course, rear of B. Right now, they're not in front of me, so I can't say which MTL's I used. The cover for the rear A and B units is tough to engage into box. Think I pressed down on it with needle nose pliers, and then applied some Goo as a safe guard.

If you have to continue with truck mounted couplers, any coupler box that takes the Ultimate T-shank coupler  will take a Micro-Trains 1128 (short shank), 1129 (medium shank), or 1130 (long shank).  I believe these numbers have been revised but you can cross reference the above numbers on the MTL website.  Someone who has installed these on similar locomotives will have to advise which size shank you will need since I only have one dummy passenger locomotive.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try the unimates first. Anybody know what shank?

It's definitely not short.

If you don't mind waiting for a day or so for me to take pictures, I can show you what I did.

Really, though, it's pretty simple.  I drilled couple of holes at the end of the frame (one on each half) and tappped them for some real small screws I have (forget precise size).  I then cut a piece of styrene to form a mounting tab, and screwed MT Z scale couplers to that.  Works great.

Here's how I did it, Andy...  :)

Rod: Have you subsequently DCC'd them? What decoder did you use if you did?

Yes, I decoderized them at the time and the details are in the link on how to modify the light boards.  I used Digitrax DZ123's, but any comparably sized wired decoder should work....
