...and can someone explain to me how some little people flying over for tea relates to the SDP40F locomotive?   :|

We'll FWIW, the description at BLW has this at the end of it.

And keep an eye open for future releases of more early Amtrak rolling stock.

I'm assuming that's Kato saying that and not something BLW added.  That still leaves the question as to which phase would be the best one to get.

If nothing else I'll expect a phase II step down el cap set.

It is the 'El Capitan' step down set, but not sure of the phase yet

Well, since the El Capitan Phase I is still available at the dealers, we can eliminate it.  And since the initial run og the SDP40F will be made in Phase I and II it would make sense if the next released version of that set would be in Phase II.

That is something from Kato themselves. "•   Model 70’s and 80’s early Amtrak trains with your existing cars or keep an eye out for future releases of early Amtrak rolling stock!"

Here's a link to the pdf they sent out in the email.

Hmmmm... does the file name N-SDP40F-PhaseIBody.pdf imply that there will be other phase bodies in the future?

Quite a few of Kato's past passenger cars would be appropriate for Amtrak... they just have not been offered in AMTK paint before...

I'll have to buy at least a pair of the Phase Is.  As for what to pull with them, just about any pre-1970s US streamlined car you want, except Alaska RR, Southern and D&RGW.  Did any other major roads stay out of Amtrak?

Rock Island, they couldn't afford to buy into Amtrak.
I’m not here to argue

Like the prototype, the SDP40F is based off of the Kato
SD40-2 Early Drive, making it a proven and reliable
mechanical design that will be easily upgradable with a
decoder for DCC operation!

Mplsjct:  Thank you.  I always forget the Rock Island, for some reason.  Probably because it seldom made the national news until it went out of business...

That's a good point.  As much as I like the phase I paint, most likely Kato will use their current cars which wouldn't be appropriate for early trains I'd be interested in.  I think the best plan for me is to not pre-order and see what cars get announced between now and actual delivery.

Amfleet One in Phase II and Phase III.

And, the El Capitan paint scheme is a Phase II scheme, isn't it? The Phase I scheme would be paint just around the windows, but not for the full length of the car:
