They did put the already release phase I El Cap in the PDF.
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

The drawing on the BLW site show the earlier pointed nose, not the blunt nose.  Don't know how authoritative the drawings are.

Blunt nose???...are you sure about that?....the only variation of noses that I've seen on an SDP40F are the notches cut into some of the ones that Santa Fe bought...
Would like to see pics of a blunt nosed SDP40F

Here you go: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3359352

The blunt noses started with the second order, 540 being the first.

I'll bet that's what they mean by 'type 1'.

Didn't they called it "phase I" using the model railroaders phases jargon?

First of all, I have no idea about any of this because it's outside my modeling era.

Second, who do you consider 'they'?  Phases are modelers terms not manufacturers.  In this case I could see how using 'phase' could be totally confusing when referring to the body style because of the 'phases' of the Amtrak paint.

And a third thing to note, once the notches were cut for the ATSF units, the locomotive was no longer called an SDP40F, it was an SDF40-2, so it wouldn't even be a 'type' of the Kato model.

But as I said at first, I'm not that knowledgeable on all of this, just the little bit I've seen and read.

edit: I went back and read the Kato description and what's more interesting then the use of word 'type' is 'as-delivered'.  So maybe the Santa Fe version is somewhere on the horizon.

Ok...I was picturing something entirely different when considerng the term blunt nose...
All of the first release numbers are lower than 540 ( I believe 535 is the highest) so the body type will have the two plane nose style with the headlight 'cut out', as opposed to the three plane nose, with the center  flat plane that houses the headlight.....IF we assume Kato models the numbers accurately.

"They" is Kato.  They used the phrase "PhaseI" in the name of the PDF file describing this model.  You know, it just so happens that many employees of model RR companies are modelers too. I already stated earlier that phases is something coined by modelers, but that terminology has been widely accepted, even by mainstream modeling magazines and by . . . model manufacturers.

I have no ideal if modelers used the phases terminology when describing variations of SDP40F but I guess that it could be confusing when used in combination of livery phases.

They're using Phase 1 to describe the first order SDP40Fs with the pointed noses.

Phases in regard to Amtrak, are Paint schemes. Phases out side of Amtrak are modelers references to differences on locomotives.
Here's more on the paint schemes (Phases) of Amtrak. http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/paintschemes/paintschemes.html
As far as the SDP40F, it will be the pointed nose...
Phase I is Bloody nose with Amtrak's inverted Arrow logo on the side. (think P42 #156)
Phase II is wide red and blue stripe over large white stripe. (think P42 #66)
Yes even Amtrak calls their paint scheme "Phases"

And of course there is a good Wiki article on those too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtrak_paint_schemes

Right after @bbussey finally finds his Pacific series sleeper, another run is announced.  Thanks Bryan!

The Santa Fe Pine series car is a great addition along side the Indian cars.  If Kato made a full dome, and maybe one of the lunch-counter or lounge cars, Santa Fe fans would have nothing left to want!  Great stuff.
