You forgot to carry the 1  :D There is 72 brushes on a SD35 just like the SD38's SD40's and SD45's (same for the dash 2 line)
That is what is nice about the new Alternators on Dash 2 and newer. 8 Slip ring brushes replace 60 brushes that were on the Main Generator. The exception are the 80Mac's, they have 10. For some unknown reason to me, the Main Stator top slip rings have 4 brushes, but the bottom only has 2. The Companion slip rings only have 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.

On the dash 2's, it's a mixed bag for the Aux Gen. You have to look and see what VR card is installed. If you have a VR 10, then 8 brushes for the Aux Gen, if you have a VR 11 through 14 you have a A/C Aux Gen. Same with the fuel pump and Turbo lube pump, they could be DC or AC.

SD60's and above plus the rebuilds now have HVAC's so only the 38's and 40's have cab heaters and some of them have been upgraded with AC motors.

EMD did take a step backwards with the 60's motors. You have 4 brushes per holder or 16 brushes per motor or 96 brushes per locomotive.

All of the above is only for EMD locomotives, when you start talking GE locomotives you open a different can of worms.

Dash 9's have 12 brushes on the slip rings and EVO's have 16.
Both Dash 9's and DC EVO's have 3 brushes per holder and 4 holders per traction motor for a total of 12 brushes per motor.
The Grid blowers have 4 brushes per blower with DC units having 2 grid blowers and AC units having 3 grid blowers.
GE's have A/C fuel pumps and do not have turbo lube pumps.
GE's have HVAC's.

I'm probably forgetting something, but until all of the DC locomotives are retired, the carbon brush manufactures will be in business for some time to come  :D  And that class is just your first day, just kidding folks but at least I hope everyone has a better idea of what goes on under the hood of a locomotive.

yup, 72 motor brushes, bad math

David, Are you thinking just the motor or motor and wheel set? Could you make the motor to accept a user supplied wheel set?

I could make the motor accept wheel sets... kato I assume? or BLMA? Does NWSL have N scale wheels that look good?

I'd rather the motors not have a wheelset as well, be the ultimate cool if the support caps and gearcases came off !!

Got pics of what you are talking about? I don't understand.

Ok , I sent the message

I would , as well as others buy your traction motors if you made them in N scale . There is a thread on TheRailwire , N scale forum I started a day ago or so about traction motors . Any chance of you doing them in N Scale .

Thanks Richard Dost aka up1950s

We will see if the well hole is being dropped over an oil deposit , or deposits in a septic tank . Fingers crossed .

I was going to say E2 , but that was already confirmed . More modern cockpit than the US-2A which I know more about .Obvious 2 engine , split windshield , still has some old gauges with the screw in red tubes to tint the white lights to red for better night vision . I was looking for Grumman on the center of the yoke , not sure if the flying saucer disguised as a plane had that though . The writing in the brake peddle portion of the rudder peddles I couldn't quite make out . Looking for the tail hook control lever , but again the clarity just wasn't there . I guessed right , but too late to count .

David, Here are some photos.
Traction Motor in truck, the gear cover is on the right side of the photo beside the wheel. The round cap on the gear cover is where you add the gear lube.

Traction motor with wheel set and gear cover removed, note the F & FF cables are in the opening where the axle would ride.

Traction motor with armature removed. The red cabling inside the motor is the field cabling.

Rear view of traction motor with wheel set.

I hope these help?

David,
Can you 3D print these in metal? If so, what's the additional cost?

Not N but this guy had a website for awhile...
HO traction motors...

That guy was bad news. An example of how not to do PR.
He had some innovative ideas but he also stiffed people on purchases of kits and such and then would just straight up ignore people who would complain while trying to not seem like a buffoon when people would call him out on his nonsense.

I could probably do it, but what is the purpose?

Compared to FUD or XFD, metal's printing resolution is really coarse.  You will lose all the details on the surface.

How cool would it be if the cables could also be "printed" along with the motor's body.

It's funny, but we actually call those dummy wheels.  :D  If we are out of motors and another shop has the motor we need, we'll actually ship the locomotive to the other shop with a dummy wheel in it, instead of waiting on a motor.  You just tie up the leads and add the unit to a consists that is headed to the new shop. It's cheaper than sending a truck with just one traction motor. The locomotive is tagged "Dead in consists".

I did this car for my freelance RR awhile back, wish I would've added more detail to the trucks now.
