Weekend Update 6/28/15

I've been getting shipments of ESM and personal samples back from Shapeways every other day in the last week or so.  Here is the first-render of the wheel payload.  It needs some additional temporary bracing to keep the scale channel bracing from warping.  But the detail looks great, particularly in FXD.



The latest render of the Modernized White Tower came back and looks great.  I also created a left-facing inset version with an 80-degree angle on the short-wall for a project I'm working on.  It has a couple of very minor errors, but I could use this as is if I had to.



Also got back the latest samples of the Low Side Gondola parts, and they look very very good.  More on that in the LSG thread.

Love that modified log loader Mark , is there a prototype for that ?

yes Richie...the whole complex is based on the Pope & Talbot mill still operation just west of the Celgar pulp mill near Castlegar BC.  I would love to show the prototype photos however I don't have permission to do so from the owner "Arrow Lake Lass" on Flikr.   The extended boom log picker is just visible in the distance form across the lake (where the photos were taken) however I believe it is used to manipulate logs on a sorting table of some form rather than reaching into the water as I have positioned it. Like 95% of the mill, I didn't have room to include the sorting table, but the log picker was just too good a feature to miss up...like the jack ladder beside it.

With my golf clubs on the opposite coast for repairs, and a monsoon forecasted for the weekend, I turned back to my CSX MOW train.  A few months ago, I painted and decaled 10 Walthers Ballast hoppers.  I already had the locomotives from Atlas, but needed a caboose.  So I found a Model Power bay window that is "close enough" for me.  I took the Chessie logos off, repainted and decaled using decals from MicroScale.  Looks good from 3' .  In the future, I'd like to find new endrails/ladders as the MP ones are very clunky and even worse with yellow paint.

I did get some decals applied to NS 3804. I need to start working on the MT4 slug I want to pair with it.

If you need to upgrade your endrails/ladders for your MOW caboose, Gold Metal Models sells an etched kit specifically for the Model Power caboose.  The part number is 160-18.  Just click on the order form and list section of the website and you will see it listed.  I had a chance to see one of the  tank car kits the other day an I was impressed with the details.

In the meanwhile, I also put a decoder in my Kato NS/Reading SD70Ace and numbered 3 Atlas CSX SD50's that I got a few months ago.  I picked numbers that matched the high headlight.  #8584 and #8557 are both ex Chessie units, while #8601 is of Seaboard System heritage.  All 3 are still at work for CSX, though in the Dark Future paint scheme, and either SD50-2 or -3 rebuild status.

You'll notice the front one is just a shell, if anyone has a spare SD50/60 chassis, I'll take it off your hands.

I started to build the Pacific Raolroad in its new home,It has been two years

[ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] The Pacific Railroad looks great, but all Kato Unitrack? That is quite ambitious, although if planned well will be reliable. It breaks the bank though.

I changed the track around on my layout in order to get an extra staging track. The New River mine looks funny with only two tracks, and I do not know if I should replace it with the new Walthers mine kit or buy another switch and restore the third siding. The pink foam will be gone soon when I get materials in few weeks. The yard is also full now because I got my shipment of 20 MT cars, but I also got a Bmann NW2 to work it.
